Hi all,
Battery went flat in key fob on my 02 STR.
Went flat quickly, with only 2 weeks of shorter range then nothing.
Swapped the battery in the fob, but still doesn't work.

At the minute I open the car with the key, then hear a beeping and I need to get the key in the ignition withinin a few minutes or the alarm goes off.

Is there a way of sorting this out or is it a dealer fix?

This is how to do it on the XJ 308 range.

On the basis you couldn't make things worse than they are already it's up to you if you want to give it a go on your S Type

Hold headlight flasher back
Turn ignition key to position 1
Flash headlights 4 times
Alarm will enter programming mode This will be confirmed by beeps from the alarm and the LED on the J gate will flash
Programme each transmitter - you can do up to 5 - by pressing the lock or unlock button on each once (see below 'tho)
The alarm should sound when you press the button to confirm it's accepted the code.

The alarm must sound a total of 5 times to complete the programming. If you're only programming one transmitter you must therefore press the button 5 times. If you're setting two then press the button on one twice and the other 3 times. 3 transmitters...oh go on you work it out.

Swich off the ignition and try locking and unlocking.

When you change the batteries in the remotes it's important to do it quickly and not touch any of the buttons when the batteries are out. You'll loose the code for certain if you do.

Great tip Steve....

I have also since read this procedure elsewhere, although yet to try it!

I can confirm that the main stealership charge £50 for re-programming - as they did me last year! furious

I know. Stealers really could do themselves a favour somtimes and do jobs like this for nothing. The amount of goodwill it would generate - especially amongst people who are prepared to spend a lot more than necessary on running a expensive prestige car rather than a diesel Eurohatch - would repay the small cost of the mechanics time several times over.

If nothing else it would tempt owners of older cars back to the dealer who could update his records, have a chat, give the customer a coffee and let him or her have a look at what's on the forecourt. Who knows what might happen - come in for a fob reset and leave thinking about the car for sale they've just seen, or realising they are overdue for a service.

Couple a bit of goodwill with a reduced servicing rate on older cars and I'm sure they'd be better off in the long run.

Talking of which...I was in a certain Brentwood Essex main dealer on Saturday and on the service desk was a notice that said:

"For reading fault codes there is now a minimum charge of
£95.20 + VAT"

When i was at a Jag dealer, if the service adviser could do it, using the manual method, it was free.

If it didn't work and a tech had to have a go it was 0.3 hours @ £88 per hour. Generally if its got a good battery (in the right way round) and you cant do it manually, it needs a new remote.

Thanks for the posts guys.
I tried to perform the program as listed above, but nothing happens.

I open the car with the key, have to put it in the ignition and turn to 2, to stop alarm going off.
Then turned ignition to 0, let it all reset itself then held full beam stalk back, turned to 1, flashed lights 4 times, but nothing.

Assume the S Type is a slightly different sequence.

Can anyone help?? - This seems to be a common issue by the number of posted and surely this information should be freely available.
I did see it advertised on ebay for £5.99 !!

That's why you'll never find me in a certain Brentwood Essex main dealer unless it's to see Ron in the parts department....

£5.99 wont buy much at a main dealer...

Just had a look on the JTIS for you - and there's nothing there about reprogramming.
E bay or another PH'er info may be the way to go - at least if you're certain you've got the right programme sequence and it won't work you can find out if somthing else has failed.

Have you only got one key fob? Can you borrow another? Sure the "new" battery is ok and in the right way round? Do all the buttons not work - remote boot or headlight driveway lighting dead too?

No buttons work at all.
I changed the battery myself, twice over.

I had some Auto Electricians working at Jag from when we did the XF launch, so will ask them to find out for me.
And when I find out, I will post for everyone to see - I would be a little upset if I was charged £50+ for a 3 minute job that needed no parts, not even a battery !!!

I am just about to call Jaguar and book in for a service and ecu check, but don't know if they'll be able to do it with all the paramount bits that's fitted - it occassionally goes into restricted performance mode, but only when its very cold, as soon as it shows, I turn off let it reset and then its fine again.
