Anyone been to see it yet? What did you think?
Mrs Asbo and I went along yesterday. I was expecting great things but came away a little perplexed. I thought Hitler was OK, but by all accounts he was a far more volatile man than that portrayed in the film. Also Himmler was pure evil and I didn't think this was accurately represented either.
The jury's also out on the accents (or lack thereof). I understand why they omitted them, but then again I don't, if you get me.

I've not seen it, but can you imagine Tom Cruise doing a German accent?Mrs Asbo and I went along yesterday. I was expecting great things but came away a little perplexed. Havent seen it yet but if you want the best portrayal of Hitler in film then if you havent seen Downfall (Der Untergang) then grab yourself a copy. Even though its subtitled its a brilliant piece of cinema!
Was looking forward to Valkyrie but have heard lots of mixed reactions to it, and I think its more of an attempt to cash in on the event than to accurately portray what actually happened.

Bill Nigh (sp?), Tom Wilkinson being fantastic as usual, cut to Cruise in his thickest septic accent - "By fighting for my country, I'm betryaing my country".
I cringed and made a mental note to avoid it at all costs.

+1I very rarely can be bothered enough to enjoy a subtitled film, but I was engrossed by downfall

Its the Scene when the generals decided to tell Hitler that all his armies are practically decimated and no-one would be coming to help. Spawned many subtitled piss-takes

I would be really interested in a film telling a story like this but am completely put off by the casting of Cruise.
I gets to the stage when an actor's face becomes so well known, that you expect to see them in roles which follow their biggest successes. And, for me, Mr Mission Impossible/Top Gun just doesn't cut it in a serious portrayal of an historic German military figure.

I am keen to go along and see it. I did read a review at the weekend that suggested it was an attempt 'to put the SS into Mission Impossible'. As long as he isn't diving around in slow motion firing two guns simultaneously I won't complain.
Actually, I think Tom Cruise is quite a good actor when he makes an effort. Most of the time he is far too self indulgent.I also think a film like this should either be in German or at least sound German. Downfall was in German and I don't think that spoilt it for audiences.

Agreed. The lack of any attempt at a German accent makes the film confusing. At first I had thought the Coup plotters were imposters from their own countries masquerading as German officers. Only after 20 mins or so, does it dawn on you that Mr Scientology is actually a puka German officer. Mmmm
