My TV card records to MPG files. The onl,y trouble is that they're huge. I suspect not very compressed.
10 minutes is usually around 100mb.

Is there any program (preferably free) tht i can use to compress these files a bit further?

Stoik video converter, can convert MPEG AVI's to Windows WMV which is a higher compression video format.

Eg. 100MB MPEG = 20MB WMV.

If you have Windows XP you could load the MPEG into Movie Maker and convert using that, as it also gives you the option of audio/video bit rate.

Microsoft Windows Media Encoder. Free and lets you select loads of bitrates and resolutions, even make your own. I find Version 7 better than Version 9 as it's more configurable but personal preference.

Agreed.

Windows media encoder is stupidly easy to use.... and version 7 is far more user-friendly than version 9
