Credit cards and the guaranteed payment scam
Discussion
I have been with AOL for years, stupid I know but! The service is rubbish doesn’t work properly etc etc, Any way at the weekend I cancelled it after weeks of trying to get through to their cancellations department and confirming that I am not in contract.
I said I want to cancel he then said ahh but you took a special offer on Jan the blah 2008 therefore you have a contract and anyway we have your credit number and you can’t stop us getting the money (I didn’t)
I contacted my credit company and they say he is right, it is a guaranteed payment, they can take any amount at any time, I then have to dispute it and they will try to sort it out.
Don’t give ISP’s or phone companies your credit card details, basically the second you do you loose the ability to not pay them for any reason whatsoever.
This has to be the biggest opportunity for fraud ever!
Someone just told me this applies to hire cars as well.

Report your card lost, then you will get a new one in a few days and it will have a different number on it.
...... and then get ready to make the bailif a cup of tea when he pops round to collect the money, plus interest and costs some 18 months later. My brother-in-law had this with AOL.

You didn't try to stop them getting the money or didn't take the special offer ?If the latter, surely the onus is on AOL to provide proof of you contracting to the special offer terms ?
