The quality of the gear change/selection in my '89 SE has been gradually getting worse over the past few months.I suspected the cables had stretched or perhaps the bushes were worn.On Saturday night I completely lost the abilty to change gear.On inspection I found that the selector cable had become detatched from the selector fork right at the rear of the box.I sourced a correct sized bolt and spacer then joined everything up nice and tight.Tried the gear change and it is better than I've ever known it to be!The slack was obviously a result of the link bolt gradualy working loose. I mention this to post members because it is evident to me that the way the fork to cable link is designed it could be prone to working loose over time.I would say if you're getting a sloppy gear change it might be worth checking this bolt first.I removed the boot floor to get at it properly.
