Where to go in Switzerland?

Any recomendations on 'must see' places in Switzerland?

I will be travelling by train this Summer.

I drove to Switzerland three years ago and stayed in Interlaken. It has beautiful scenery plenty of restaurants boat trips on the lake and a main railway station. Even then it was expensive, but I guess ditto for all of Switzerland. Really enjoyed the place and I hope you have a great time.

Bern has a beautiful 'altstadt'. The Tessin (Italian part) has some lovely lakes with some fantastic views. Some good walking to be had in the Jura. Bodensee is great in the summer. Don't know much about the French part though. Shame you will be coming by train as there are some great mountain passes to drive over.

Whatever you do, do not eat cheese fondue in the summer like the hords of Japanese tourists around Zurich see!!

Lauterbrunnen - short train from Interlaken has Hotel Steinbock near the station. Very "olde worlde" and VERY reasonable prices - for Switzerland, and from there you can easily visit the Trummelbach Falls.

If you want to go to Bond-Street-sur-Alpes, then I can recommend St. Moritz.

Zermatt is a fantastic place - loads of lovely restaurants and some of the prettiest (and most accessible) scenary anywhere.

If you want a slightly different Switzerland, you could try Geneva or Montreaux.

ETA: If you are already travelling by train, you could hook up with the Glacier Express which goes St Moritz/Davos to Zermatt - takes about 7 hours.

Fist time I stayed there was..............................too long ago to remember.
Mind you, over the years it hasnotchanged a lot but the prices are good because of it's proximity to the station so it's not typically "touristy".

Go up Grindelwald. The Eiger, Matterhorn and Jungfrau are just awesome.

Even if you're not into mountains or climbing I defy anyone not to be impressed looking up at the north wall of the Eiger.

I spent many a happy hour watching Clint Eastwood in the Eiger Sanction. Spectacular photography.

You can't really take an unspectacular picture of the Eiger. I actually tried to this summer out of bloody mindedness and they're all just fearsome from every angle.

If you're in that neck of the woods try the Murren railway. It's a bit steep in more ways than one so take a stainless steel flask of coffee with you DON'T buy one at the top

Yup, went there a couple of years ago OFF season and it was superb, right beneath the matterhorn, quiet restaurants, no queuing for anything.

Went para-gliding off the top of the mountain too!!!

All fantastic places to go and spend a couple of days. I know a lot of people keep saying about how very expensive it is but I didn't really find that. Petrol seemed to be the same as other neighbouring countries, accomodation wasn't that expensive (I was seeking out guest houses and rooms above bars rather than swanky hotels).

Instead of going the long way round from Jungfrau to Zermatt you can stick your car on a train that takes you under the mountain that only cost a few quid. Not sure really what was that expensive.

Maybe it was after the time I sat in the main square in Florence and forgot to look at the price list and sunk a few beers. 9 quid a pint !!
