Gear selection when cold
Discussion
I am having a devils own job selecting gears when the Sag is cold - especially first and reverse. Pumping the clutch seems to help but its not as smooth as it used to be. The car has only done 7k so I wouldnt have thought it would be wear and tear but you never know. I even struggle sometimes to get the car into 5th even when warm. Any suggestions or am I looking at something quite costly in the near future??

Possibly a slave cylinder. Next tell tale signs will be fluid under car and the brake fluid warning light (combined resevoir). Part is not too expensive - there is an upgrade. Gearbox needs to be dropped. The clutch is on the way out (not the friction material, but the "release springs" - not the technical name for them) - mine has the same problems with 1st and reverse - waiting on getting it into the local servicer to get a new clutch.
You can try removing the screw that limits the travel of the clutch pedal, this might give you a few more miles before replacing it..
Btw, mine occured hot or cold - no difference.

I'd be very very suprised if that's the case - clutch drag possibly due to a badly set up clutch, but not the fingers at 7000 miles. You can try removing the screw that limits the travel of the clutch pedal, this might give you a few more miles before replacing it..

Having trouble getting my tuscan into 1st and reverse at the moment. The clutch has got 30,000 miles on it but its nowt to do with fingers or anything like that. Basically it where the gear stick connects to the gearbox, its come a bit loose. Having it sorted next week while its in for a service. Its worth checking yours to see if you have the same problem.
If pumping the clutch consistently makes it better, then I'd guess one of the cylinder seals was on its way out, not forming a proper seal any more, and hence not having the hydraulics working quite right. Have had many slave cylinder seal failures on Tivvies over the years, but they've normally been quite sudden ones. Have had the slow failure on other cars, though (most notably on a Nissan Patrol about a day before hitting the Sahara - erk!)
Could be the release fingers, too, as mentioned. Sounds like a book-it-in and take-it-out job, either way, unless there's something particularly obvious to spot (carpet stuck under the clutch pedal is the usual one
) If you've not got a warranty on it, it could be an "interesting" time to buy one if you can find one that includes seals... *walks away whistling*

probably slave cylinder, but fingers known to explode as well so the best thing to do is renew the clutch and slave cylinder at the same time. The problems you describe are down to lack of use, which actually goes against the thoughts of low mileage is a good thing.
good luck

If it sits around for a long time, the seals start to give up from lack of use. If the clutch is coming out, I'd be very tempted to rejuvenate the whole thing as the labour cost in pulling it out & apart and putting it back in is a big chunk of the overall bill.Gassing Station | Tamora, T350 & Sagaris | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
