Steering queries

I have aquired the fire damaged S from grantham

but have spotted something odd - see the bracket below - has anyone got any idea why. Adrian@ has seen it and is curious as well

Not only that the steering is 7/8ths of turn of the steering wheel to full right lock from straight ahead and 1 1/4turns to left full lock when the odd bracket above acts as a steering stop. Its difficult to tell the front wheel position as there is a space saver on one wheel and the propper wheel on the other.
Any ideas please

As a steering lock stop it's in completely the wrong place. The only other thing I can think of is a mount intended for a replacement anti-roll bar, but it's so close to the upright that it's obvious going to cause problems there too. The curious thing is that it's obviously been painted with the wishbone so whoever made it must have been happy with it, but didn't bother doing the same to the other side. Does the other wishbone look similar in terms of paint/condition?
Any chance of tracing the previous owner just to satisfy curiosity?

Interesting thing there is that the track rod looks clean and relatively new, and that is a new lock nut on the track rod end. Wonder if the rack's been changed / refurbished but not centralised properly when refitted?
Peter - am I missing something, how would that not act as a steering stop? when the hub carrier hits that bracket, it can't turn any further?

Difficult to say about condition as the other side has a small amount of fire/smoke damage BUT there is no sign that a similar bracket has ever been fitted. All the re furbishment of the front suspension was done before the previous owner bought the car nso no intel there. It works as a steering lock stop when on left lock

If you look at above pic and compare the track rod end the N/S seems a lot older so I guess N/S replaced for some reason.
Still Hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!

That one looks more like I would expect it to look!If you look at above pic and compare the track rod end the N/S seems a lot older so I guess N/S replaced for some reason.

Yep I'd agree - that n/s track rod seems to have been renewed, with new lock nut. And pretty recently too, I'd suggest. Wonder why... and if that's related to any need for a steering stop...
Hmmmmm right enough!
A good point - any rack and pinion rack wears in the middle first (straight ahead) so could someone have done a bodge so that staight ahead is no longer using the centre of the rack?
They made it deliberately off centre then fitted a stop at the 'long' end.
Armchair guessing of course.
