De-sensitized to local events?

Not sure the title is quite the right one, but upon arriving home tonight I was told there had been a murder about half a mile down the road.

I don't live in London or anywhere where you almost come to expect these things once in a while, and tbh I think I surprised myself a little by almost responding "and..?" and basically not "getting it" and grasping that in our sleepy little city it's actually quite a major event.

Strange how all the bad stuff going on in the world can make you immune to events on your own doorstep.

Is there such a thing a "sleepy little city"?.. especially in the midlands.
