Is it possible to get some VHS footage onto MiniDV (and thereby onto computer) I have a Mini DV camcorder but this does not have AV in. Any other ways?

After watching Concorde on Friday, I remembered that back in 1990 I took some VHS footage of a Concorde and a Vulcan flying together over North Weald Near Harlow in Essex and want to get it off the old tape.

The DVD route is probably cheaper if you have access to a half decent PC setup.... there may even be a PH'er who would oblige!

Any decent AV company will be able to transfer VHS to Mini DV for you, providing that the material isn't protected by anyoine's copyright (other than your own)

Bear in mind though, that Mini DV is not infallible, and will deteriorate in time (despite what the manufacturers tell you)

A failing Mini DV tape is worse than failing VHS, as since Mini DV is digital, any failure in the tape results in zero image. With VHS, you get a poor picture if it begins to fail.

Anyway... enough rambling.... DVD would be the better option, and much easier to play at leisure (rather than messing about connecting camcorders to TV's etc)

That's a lot of cash for something that will probably only get minimal use (unless you have a whole archive of VHS stuff to transfer)

That's true. I bought it mainly because of having all of the early movies of my daughter on vhs-c and this was the easiest method to get them into digital so that I could burn them on DVD. That is priceless to me as I believe the DVD media will far outlast the VHS-C

Agreed.

My son is now 16 weeks old, and I have shot far too much stuff on Mini DV. I have dumped all of the rush footage onto DVD as a permanant backup in case the Mini DV tapes fail (which they will one day!)

My intention is to produce a short film that charts his life (kind of thing to embaress him with on his 18th!)

When I look back at the footage I have already shot in the last 16 weeks, to me, this stuff is already priceless..... first gurgle, first baby rice etc etc

I use an Adaptec VideOh! CD (AVC-1100). Cost around £65 and comes complete with software to capture and create VCD's / DVD's.

Here's the link:
