you dirty rat

got a rat/rats in my compost bin

whats the best way to get rid of them, can i use poison.
i also have 2 cats so dont want to use anything that may harm them

Our Jack Russell ignored the rat (it was cornered, she sniffed and walked off!)

Rifle, poison (you can get tubes to stop cats / dogs getting at it) or a great big fen type trap

on a slightly more serious note, the council will normally get rid of them for free and advise on how to keep them away. At least, they did with us.

Get rid of all the undergrowth / hiding places around your compost bin so that they don't have a hidden route to get there. Find out where the nest is (usually more undergrowth / holes in walls / under decking). Put poison down only where the cats won't get at it. Destroy / block the nest if possible.

Good luck! Our rat problem disappeared once the chav upstairs neighbours moved out (evicted) and stopped leaving their black bin bags out.....

The council will come and poison them for you. Or get an airgun - that's how we dealt with the ones living in our garden.

A box with poison in and a rat sized hole. Got rid of rats from our chicken run a few years ago.

Depending on your local council you might get it for free.

Add 1 jack russell. They were amusingly described on here once as 'WMD's for rats'
