I have an E39 540i and suspect i have a coolant leak - coolent added to expansion bottle usually gone within a day or 2 but can drive after the low coolant warning and the car never even slightly overheats.

Had a similar problem when the expansion bottle split and i had to replace it after changing and topping up i had to keep bleeding it and topping up eventually it was fine until recently - each time i do top up i can bleed using the bleed valve on top of the expansion bottle and get quite a lot of bubbling.

Are there any common areas to find coolant leaks? Could it be sucking air in somewhere? Seems like i'm only losing whats in the expansion tank but cant see a leak on it and its also new only replaced about 6 months ago.

Leaking water pump or one of the hoses at the back of the egine? If you drive it a little way from cold, then stop before it has really warmed up, can you see any water dripping underneath, esp down by the 'box?

I'm having a similar problem. It's a 1999 e46 318. I think it could be losing the water through the exhaust but, not entirely sure. I've been told it could be a head gasket problem? Any advice would be much appreciated

Similar issue on my last 540i Sport. Turned out to be a small hole in the rad.

OOPS old topic.
