Engine spec...

2.0 16v audi '6A' audi bottom end, knife edged crank, balanced flywheel, uprated bolts.
1.8 vw 16v 'kr' code polihed and ported head, stock cams but may be going for fast road..

This engine was dyno's at 167.8bhp on standard bosch k jet injection, i'm looking to make a move to carbs, ive picked up a pair of twin 40 dellorto's on a 16v inlet mani, with linkages and a pressure reg for a good price! I'm looking to take the engine to 180-190ish bhp, would 40's be restrictive or if jetted right will they be ok?????
Its to go in my 1989 Golf gti 16v.
Cheers - Nick

I had 40's on my 205 GTi (1905cc 8 valve) , it only dynoed at 122bhp despite a refresh and a hot cam and some serious jets. With a 2.0l 16 valve you ideally want some 45's or else you'll be restricting power at the top end.

Some people will wonder why you're bothering with carbs but I liked the better throttle response which was cruicial to pull the car back straight when the back end let go on track.

I think that 40's would be a little restrictive, as mentioned above 45's would probably realise your aims. I run 40's on an oversized cross flow and i see about 120hp (dynoed).

Also be aware that if the manifold you have is the Mangoletsi one which is very short (only 2 or 3 inches) and with an abrupt 45 degree bend in it you'll probably get even less power than the stock FI system because the manifold flows so badly. I wouldn't even waste my time fitting carbs or TBs with the Mangoletsi manifold.

TWM in the States used to make a very good VW 16v manifold about 5 or 6 inches long with a nice smooth curve to the runners. Whether they still do I have no idea.

Twin forties are to small for that spec motor period, even if you fit the biggest chokes 36mm they are still to small wink 45,s and above 48,s wont meter fuel very nicely for the road though so 45,s would be the best compromise,me personally i would go for an ECU with throttle body injection wink
