The google earth thread reminded me of a site i stumbled upon a while back.
basicly a guy tunes his bike and rides into the "dead zone" around Chernobyl to take pictures.

Really fascinating stuff!!

My mate runs tours there now and when he came back from his first visit he showed me a picture of the bumper cars. First thing that popped into my head was 'you didn't get to close to the bumper cars did you?'.

Granted it is pretty poor but really interesting. the info on chapter 1 and 2 got me hooked

I thought so too - quite well informed if the facts are accurate.

One thing that I can't quite understand, in a place SO vast, why have they tried to save some of the towns by digging up the roads / replacing water pipes and rebuilding hospitals? She states that in some place the readings are only 25 (particals or whatever) per hour - but in other areas of the town they jump to 50.

.... okay so that might not be alot... but in the UK people get twitchy about living near a phone mast!

Why not just write the WHOLE area off for along time to come.

Nice pictures but the whole 'motorcycle trip through the forbidden zone' thing was made up. She was on a guided tour (complete with a motorbike helmet).

Anyone can go on one; I've been considering it for a few years, just need to find the time and cash.

+1 have been considering it for a while now. I love exploring abandoned places like that. Myself and 5 friends visited Centralia Pennsylvania, famous for its underground mine fire last year.
