Any Teachers on Here?

I've got an educational placement coming up at a local comp. in the Maths dept. (about 700 pupils there, small town fairly rural area) it is part of my course, now I haven't set foot in a school for 4 years though do have 3 clarinet pupils - what can I expect from this?

It is an option I'm seriously exploring as I do really enjoy teaching clarinet and get a real sense of achievement out of it but am slightly apprehensive about school as you have 20 not 1!

Pros/ Cons to the profession and also what I will be letting myself in for would be much appreciated.

Its going to depend on the school and what the student attitude is....

I work at a moderate school... the kids are kids....



The best advice I was ever given was... Dont ever smile in your first few terms.... Dont casually talk to the students, dont give them the opportunity to pick holes in anything you do and never back down


Once you get over the initial "oooh new teacher" its not bad... you learn who the trouble makers are and what method will calm them down....



Having said all that, some teachers here cant cope with half a class of kids..... I guess it depends on your attitude...

Swearing, attitude, fights, refusal to follow instructions, chaos, small scale war.

Depends on the school tbh.

20 in a class isn't too bad, I sometimes teach 33.

20? Bugger me must either be the bottom set or its not a comp! I'd be chuffed if I had less than 28 in a class... It'll be a doddle if its that small a school.


Seriously though, try to watch as many teachers as you can. Don't let them make you only see one. Chances are you'll never teach in their style and so try to get a broad sample. Talk to the kids and see what they think. Watch the interaction between GOOD staff and pupils. Find out a little bit about each kid if you are there for long enough so they realise you give a crap and most of all enjoy it.

Expect to do more admin than actual teaching, not a great thought but sadly true.

Thanks for the advice so far I think I will get to see quite a few different classes all sets and years, being there for three weeks I don't imagine I'll get to know the pupils but should get to see a general idea of how the school works and different teaching styles. Hopefully get an idea if it is a career path I would like to follow too

Teaching - when it goes well it's the best career in the world. When it goes badly, just try to learn from your mistakes (and from others' successes).
