Went out to get a link removed this morning. Went to The Watch Lab in the Arndale. Asks me where I got the watch tells me it's a beauty, about 10 years old blah blah. He said £29.95 we charge for that. YOU WHAT??? 30 notes for taking a link out. "Yes Sir, standard charge for a Tag, most places will send it away, we are specialists".

So I say "do you mind if i get a second opinion on that" - 2 minute walk to the Watch Doctor... £5 in and out, did it while i waited.

Do they assume because you have a decent watch that you dont mind being ripped off?

In his defence, the chap isnt in charge of the prices and he did seem clued up on the watch, up until he said its still worth about £1000. Dont think so chap.

Even a fivers a rip-off.

I'd expect any decent jeweller to do it for free esp if you bring it in at a quiet time, implying your brought it from them doesn't hurt though wink

Just make sure that the shop stocks your particular brand of watch otherwise their insurance wont cover you if they drop it etc.

I would like to have a go myself, but i was worried about damaging the watch. I have a few old watches that I wouldnt mind fiddling with and learning a little bit about how they work etc.

Watch is looking damned good on my wrist now though!

yeah £30 seems very steep!

I know samuels used to charge £9.99 which I thought was bad(Ernest Jones were probably slightly more) - especially when it only took me 2 minutes to do them. But that was only when people bought a watch that they'd bought elsewhere in to be adjusted. Although we wouldn't adjust TAG's or any expensive watch, same with batteries etc, as if we damaged them we'd be screwed!
Obviously when somebody buys a watch it was done foc.

Most bracelets have push pin, or screw fixed links which are easy enough to adjust with minimal investment in tools & very modest skills.

I was told this had screw fixed links which made it harder but the other guy didnt seem to have an issue.
