Tried to take out 100euros from a ski resort cash machine and it gave me 250euros!

The receipt stated 100 withdrawn, do you reckon I will get charged for the 250? Also, a few minutes later there were 2 French guys and I stayed for a minute and watched, they just kept withdrawing! Do you reckon they could get in trouble from their bank for that?

Made my day!

I take it you went back to the machine and got some more?

If you have a slip from the cashpoint that says you took out x Euros, and the x Euros was displayed on your online/printed monthly statement I would bet a pound to a penny that you are home free.

Whoever owns the cash machine will know, you will be charged.

Similar thing on the news a few years back when a cash point had been filled incorrectly. £10s in the twenties slot and £20s in the tens. Someone realised and rinsed it and then called all their mates. I think the bank clawed it back.

It happened last week at a Supermarket cashpoint.

They announced they would take the hit and not chase customers who had been overpaid.

How would they know I got 250? I did nothing illegal and have got the statement that shows 100.

In the case I can remember, the ATM was giving out double what it was asked for. It got emptied in about 10 minutes. Bank decided not to do anything, but presumably hit the ATM company for the difference.

Youre home free. They cant tell which customer had which notes. If they could, the same system of notification would stop it from actually occurring. *

Personally I'd clean it out, keep the money for a few months, if you hear nothing its pretty safe to assume you're home free and go spend it on coke and hookers!!!

Or save it if you've got your sensible hat on...

It varies, pretty much on the whim of your bank, whether you get to keep it.

What sort of cash machine was it? A proper bank one or one of those ones you see in Spar shops etc? The shop ones only take one sort of note and you set the type in the menu. Crazily enough the menu is often accessible from the keypad - holding * and # normally does it. It's password protected but up until fairly recently, when there was a spate of people scamming them, the passwords were often left as the default.

Not so, I'm afraid. The safeguards built into these machines are quite incredible and you can be pretty sure that they will know exactly which notes went out to which customer. The only thing they haven't worked out how to stop yet is the bit where the squishy human part of the system puts 50 euro notes into the 20 euro slot - but rest assured that they will know when it was done, when it was fixed, and who got which notes in the interim. You are also legally obliged to pay it back, as you can hardly claim to have been unaware that you were given the money by mistake.

Of course, as has been said, often the institutions concerned will take the monetary hit rather than the bad publicity.

The machine srecord absolutely every last detail, and as others have said already, it's likely that they will just ammend your account.

Not had it happen this way round, but did have a cash machine that gave me less than I requested. I contacted the back, who had already corrected my bank balance, as they knew the mistake had been made

A friend of a friend (but true story, apparentley) worked in a bank in Edinburgh where someone accidently put the mini statement slips in the ATM's cartridge for £10 notes and £10 notes in the ATM's cartridge for mini statements.

So the guy who asked for £50 was given five blank mini statements with £50 debited from his account, and the guy who asked for a mini statement was given £10 and no debit to his account! As you can guess, everyone heard and soon the ATM was emptied as the locals ordered lots of mini statements, thinking they were getting free cash!

The bank quickly closed the ATM then reconciled it and debited the accounts of those who had tried their luck....

Most of the above stories are in the UK. As the OP was abroad I reckon there's much more chance of him getting away with it.

You will be charged €250 otherwise it will be classed as theft. It's the same when your account is credited with money that isn't your's. You are obliged by law to pay it back. Remember the money has to come from somewhere such as another person's account, an employee's salary etc.
