Well my week just keeps on getting better

This morning go out to the Chim and it won't start. The sound it makes when trying to start is a very loud clicking noise, it does not seem to be turning over as normal.

The lights seem to be bright enough but the windscreen washers are slooooowww. Is it a battery thing? We found a yellow box thing 1" * 1" * 2" with 5 prongs (spade connector fittings) on the floor beside the fuse box but I don't know where it has come from and the bible doesn't seem to have the answers

Can anyone shed any light just on the fairly crap description I have given above?

Any help gratefully received

Sounds like the solenoid is working but not the actual starter. Probably partially engaged so solenoid not getting to move enough to operate switch.

Try putting it in gear (say 3rd) and rocking it back and forth a bit - this might free it up.

Or giving it a good tap with a hammer.

Just remember to take back out of gear before trying key again.

(If either of these work probably worth taking out, stripping it down for a good clean etc.)
GOOD LUCK!

Just re-read your post - the yellow box sounds like a relay - check your fuse box type against the bible and look for an empty space that should be filled. - This shouldn't affect the starter though as that's direct.

I'd guess that your battery is very low - probably caused by the sudden cold snap, which batteries hate... Another sign is that the whine of the fuel pump is lower than usual. Try giving it a decent charge (trickle overnight) and see how it is in the morning, before you start taking everyhting apart!

Turned out to be the battery being almost flat. One of the terminal connectors was loose too, which probably didn't help, nor did the red herring of a stray relay floating around by the fuse panel. Still have no idea where that came from as everything appears to be working

Jump started it from the Tuscan once I'd figured out how to connect the jump leads then took it for a short run just o get a bit of juice in the battery.

See how it fares in the morning - hopefully have enough to get it going then the run to work should get it charged up.
