I posted this thread about 7 months ago, I originally posted it about the bad paint finish on one of my cars (BMW 3 series M sport), when I was looking on the M Power forum tonight I found it was back near the top so I had a read. I thought it should be in the detailing forum now, so here it is........

Please read to the end it is brilliant......... lol

KDS does a great job and that guy ranting on is a complete c#ck.

With regard BMW...I spent a few hours at our local BWM Stealership with the Sales Manager a while back as I had worked on one of their customers car and he had asked me to call him.
On looking at 15 cars parked out front (all brand new unregistered)they all had paint defects. All had swirls put in by their washguy (wont call him a valeter) and his dirty chamois but they all had orange peel paintwork...
When I mentioned that we could remove this and have the finish a lot better, the Sales Manager said,

' If I sold all 15 cars today maybe, and its a big maybe, one of them may pick up on the condition of the paintwork. Why should I pay for someone to remove the defects when hardly anyone will notice'.

So if thats the thinking behind the sales people, then what chance have they got for the finish to get any better...

I also had a similar conversation with the Chrysler dealership quite a while back when they had a Viper in the showroom. The red paint looked orange and the paint was in desperate need of a good machine polish as it was badly contaminated. This was marked up for £79,995.......I visited a few times to have a look and it was there for nearly a year. In the end I offered to clay and wax if for free to show them the difference just that would make but they refused. I found out it never got sold there and was shipped to another dealership elsewhere...

My take:

Kelly is a bit of a God wetsanding whole cars... it takes a lot of patience and skill, and I say that as someone who wields a rotary. That is first base compared to wetsanding large panels.

Secondly, Kelly is far too cheap wink

Thirdly, Mike was trolling. Some people will be happy looking after a car themselves with a cheap wax, just as some people are happy driving a Nissan Primera and ranting at the 'idiots' who don't. Each to their own. To try and attack Kelly or those who use professional detailers is narrow minded to the extreme. If Mike could perfect his paint and keep it swirl free to Kelly's standards, then fine (the chances are low of course). But he shouldn't denigrate those who need some outside assistance to do so. I can't install a boiler, but plumbers don't gang up on me and take the p1ss because they can and I can't.

Springer's final thought is that detailing is often 'pearls before swine'. If you can't appreciate it, then you probably never will. Enjoy your car the way it is. There are some people who do appreciate detailing, just as some people appreciate a decent wine and others can't taste the difference between Margaux and plonk. Different interests, different attitudes... live and let live. smile
