And there's a remote chance someone might actually suggest something vaguely sensible.

Actually ... on 2nd thoughts ......

What are the requirements?

The older shaped Omegas go for peanuts and you can even get the manly sized 3.0 V6 for under a grand. Some of the big old volvos are absolute bargains and obviously you can never count out the E34s.

How long are you planning on keeping the car for?

Is it just going to be a work runner, or better?

Barge? 5/7 series, Lexus, E/S class?

328 is the wrong colour, the S Class is just slightly too 'played with', the 5 looks nice and so does the Audi, would you want another tourer/avant though?

Criteria is as follows .....

A 50 mile a day daily driver
Manual (although won't say no to an auto if it's right)
Reliable
Respectable MPG
Fun
Not a convertable
Would prefer a hatchback - but saloon is fine
Big spec.

To last a long time - so will become a high-miler - so must be pretty robust in that repsect.

I've excluded all of the above for a reason .....

Merc - all blinged/chavved up, so unlikely it's been serviced properly
3-Series - wrong colour and wheels
Audi - it's an estate (but still very tempting)
5-Series - the guy selling it gave me very conflicting stories as to why he was selling. Plus he's been 'mucking' about with it (but he's not a mechanic)

Get a Lexus or similar, it'll be dull but great for wafting and will have loads of toys and will sail past 100,000 miles. Or a 7 series David's is totally wafttastic. Neither of those would really be that economical though.

Not the Merc then with its 4.2 eek

5 series looks smart, and the solidly made too for the job you have in mind. Although, are you looking for something different for a change?

To be honest, I keep coming back to the E34s and 36s as my first point of call.

I saw a lovely C-class Merc - everything was perfect ..... except it was a diesel frown

You, like I, know how good the E34 can be, there will be one somewhere that will fit the bill, just got to hunt the bugger down now!!
