Learn some basic first aid

On a heavily overcrowded train to London this morning some poor lady started to sway and felt faint - she then started to fall to the floor. One lady who was standing right next to her helped her to the floor and then everyone stood away and a couple of people muttered "I dont know what to do".

I was really shocked that nobody intervened. I don't know a lot of first aid but do know what to do if someone faints or feels dizzy. I was the only one who got on my knees and helped this lady cool down and talked to her until she felt better. I myself am 15 weeks pregnant and it was hard manouvering this lady on my own into a sitting position. Somone shouted out if a someone could give up their seat but again.. people just sat there. What is wrong with people??? No wonder this country is like it is if we are all so self-absorbed.

It's not a lot to do and is easily remembered.

This has made me feel very strongly in that I think more people should learn the basics of first aid and to also teach your kids from a young age what do to as it could really help some poor person out.

I've thought for along time that schools could devote 30 mins a week to teaching First Aid. That would probably save far more lives than speed cameras. (Except that one costs money and one makes money)

Is first aid taught in schools? If not, surely it should be?

Im a first aider at work. Ive never really had to use it in a work situation, but have in social situations. Its a very important skill to learn IMO. Id hate to be in a position where someone I know was injured/unconcious and I didnt know what to do......

FFS what is up with people these days? I sometimes feel like an over-courteous alien who has just landed from outer space. On buses/trains (- Buses are free for me and trains the easiest way to get to London) I wouldn't think twice about giving up my seat for someone elderly/pregnant/fat (Alright, not the last one...

Well done on helping. I've done it too - when a woman tripped in the street and cut her chin, when a disabled buggy tipped over on a kerb and when a cyclist was knocked off his bike.

I don't think twice, it just seems right to help even though my first aid skills are a little rusty.

You are sure she fainted? she wasn't just picking up some loose change she dropped?

Christ-if I had a bit of a turn on the train and some pregnant woman ran over and started reading the labels in my clothing I would likely spit on her or something.

The problem with situations like this, where there's a crowd, is that everyone thinks 'well someone else here will deal with it'. If most of the people have no first aid training, it's a fairly natural reaction as well.

It's out of order if no one gave a seat up though.

I think it's a great idea to teach kids some basic first aid.

The St.John's Ambulance website has some downloadable First Aid advice Mp3's that I keep on my phone, you never know!

Yes, I think it might be a little unfair to label society as selfish when people don't help out in a situation like this. Is this not a well known psychological phenomenon, bystander syndrome or something? Famous case where a woman was murdered in public New York in the 50's but nobody intervened? Maybe a more effective way of getting someone to give up their seat is to directly ask (or order) one person to do so, rather than appealing to the whole carriage.
