Just went to the surgery next door to register. I've had the flu over Christmas/New Year and although it went away it has left me with a pretty bad sinus infection. Hasn't gone away on its own so I went to get a prescription for some antibiotics. I've moved since the last time I went to the doctor (2 years ago) so not registered at this one.
First of all, they told me that they couldn't register me as I didn't have suitable proof of address. Apparently a tax assessment from HMRC on headed paper with my name and address, and a a driving license isn't good enough. Eventually they agreed and then told me that they couldn't give me an appointment anyway because I was 'too late for registration.' She gives me a list of times - 8am-12am Tuesday through Friday. This isn't supposed to be a makeshift medical centre in the Belgian Congo, they have something like a dozen doctors so must see at least 120 patients a day, and they can't bloody register me because I arrived at the wrong time of day???

... I'm not either. I can't justify losing 1/2 a days wages to fill out forms of forms, to get hold of forms, so I can prove that I indeed can read well enough to be worth seeing.

king toe. I only use medical services when I really, really need to. So no chaps, I DIDN'T fkING GO TO THE DOCTOR UNTIL I NEEDED TO SEE ONE! I guess I forgot that this country is populated by jobsworth s who will prevent you from seeing a doctor because you didn't come to the surgery at the right time of day to fill out some goddamn forms.Thudd said:

I dont think I would register just for the sake of it either... I can see the OP's point on this one. And if it were an emergency I would call an Ambulance or get in a taxi/lift to A&E damn quick, I wouldn't mess about with a GP!Otherwise you'll be waiting a fortnight if you need a root canal.

ps - I have been in a situation where I drove the F-in-law to A&E whilst talking to 999 on the phone live as it were; we got to A&E way before an ambulance was going to get to us. At least they ended up with a nurse and chair etc waiting for us on arrival.
Try telling the receptionist you'll just order some drugs off the internet - worked a treat at getting me a same day appointment when I knackered my back. (I was in agony and needed some stronger painkillers than I could get from the chemist, originally called on Friday am, was told I could have an appointment Tues pm)

The NHS may not be the world's best but it's pretty fking good when it needs to be and a damn sight better than the world's richest country has, and maybe you need to consider yourself lucky to have what we have in this country?I am so sick of people taking pot shots at the NHS for no good reason. When I registered with my doctor's surgery I filled in a quick form and had to make an appointment with the practice nurse who checked to see if I had any existing conditions and tested my urine. It didn't take half a day and it was hardly an inconvience to make an appointment that suited me. FFS, stop moaning and accept that you should've registered with the doctor when you moved into the area so there'd be no problems when you needed to use the service.
Did they not let you register, or let you register but then not let you book an appointment?
If the former, then I think it's a bit stupid. I also think you should have registered prior to needing to visit personally, but that's your choice.
If it's the latter I'm not that surprised, my surgery won't book appointments after mid day, unless you ask for an 'emergency' appointment (I tend to think of these mostly as hypochondriac appointments though). It's a bit crap, but I suppose it's not that hard to phone them another day is it?

ttier healthcare than us you are happy to accept whatever deficiencies the NHS might have without the slightest bit of complaint? For the record I love this country and consider myself very lucky to live in it. I do however consider it to be patently ridiculous to refuse to register new patients when it is a simple procedure and the centre is well staffed and not busy.
