Does anyone know what problems these have when they gain many, many miles 173,267 to be precise. The car is a 2001?

Guy who I work with had one of a similar vintage. Apparently as with all the big volvos they eat suspension and brakes. He also reckons head gaskets can become an issue at this mileage.

That isn't a lot of miles for a T5.

You'll be wanting to check the turbo for signs of wear. The clutch should still be good.

They are heavy cars, so brakes & suspension might need attention.

Apart from that, nothing really major.

AS mentioned brakes and susp. Auto boxes take clutches out of the equation. Wouldn't have thought HG would need doing, but you may as well as it becomes a whole lot more expensive if they do break!

As with any turbo check the exhaust smoke

Black - burning too much fuel
Blue - Burning oil
White - burning water

Turbo oil seals are prone to going, and they eat anti-roll bar drop links.

Oh, and bulbs wink

On the newer cars (P2) STC or DSTC will be installed instead of TRACS.

TRACS ABS can be fixed for < 100 quid. The abs unit gets dry joints inside, if you are good with a soldering iron you can do it yourself. else there is a bloke on ebay that does them exchange for 90 quid.

Suspension and brakes will be ready to change soon, mine went finally at 195K. wheel bearings lasted to 205K( both now replaced)

they are a little heavy on brakes but not that expensive from GSF.

Tyres, Nankang NS2s come in at < 50 quid a corner fitted and balanced and are really good in both wet and dry(on 3rd set and covered 75K on them)

Main bearing oil seal can leak and it drips onto teh exhaust so make sure you sit with fan on stationary for 5 mins after your test drive, any smell of burning oil coming in will be this.

otherwise they are superb buses. The paint is really good and hard so you can shine them up lovely. seats are amazing even at high mileage. I have yet to see one that looks slighty worn even at > 200K miles. comfy, fast, safe, practical, etc

The rear arm rest is also a childs seat which means you can get 3 kids across the back is at least 1 is > 3 years old.

They also run lovely on LPG. I've done ~ 80 K on it on mine(Which will be up for sale soon as i've just bought and A8 4.2 also on LPG)

I would say the main worry is the gearbox, these are a Jap box and use special oil, they cost a fortune to replace mine has done 93K (2000 car newer shape). I had to flush the oil which has now fixed the bad shifting. The engines are fine mine is chiped to 300bhp,could get more as I am now running on gas,but 0-60 in 6.5 and 170 top end is fine for me!Tyre wear is not good don't get more than 15,000 out of the front tyres.
I have owned the car since it was 18 months old, never broken down, can drive non stop to South of france with no backache, fit tons of stuff in the back.Has not cost much in parts, apart from normal service items its had a thottle body ,airflow meter and a pair of antiroll bar link arms. Can be heavy on front pads, think its had 5 sets of front pads and a set of front discs. The wife would't drive anything else and its built like a tank.

2 very common V70 problems:

1. ETM failure,,, very common, was on watchdog etc.. Volvo reduced the price of the parts but it will still cost you 400 quid if it goes kaput

2. turbo return oil pipe seal... bad design and teh most common source of oil leak. 10 minutes DIY job to replace though.

3. inner track rod ball joints can easily go... common MOT failure. the part of 25 quid though and labour is less than 30 mins and an easy DIY job

apart from that, fantatsic cars.. I swear by them
mine has done 175,000 miles, been to scotland and back twice in the last 6 monnths and even though its just a 190bhp 2.3t its friggin fast in gear

yes

Good tip.

In other markets, ETM is replaced under warranty. Not here in the UK. I bought a V70 at about 90k miles, that had had the module replaced very recently to avoid this issue.

The car could potentially be up for sale - 2000 'W', metallic green, lots of options, roof rails, etc - OP, pm me if interested... wink

I have a 2002 v70 in my sights, 82k, t5 se auto. Low owners and very good history. Beyond etm what other significant non consumables should I be checking on? And what is a fair price? It's metallic, leather and not geartronic. Described as a very nice car....
