Auto Terrorism
US Car Dealers hit by arson and vandalism now want offenders treated as terrorists
A trade body representing car dealers in the USA is behind a bill being proposed to make 'Auto Terrorism' a federal offense.
Car Traders in America have been hit recently by protest groups damaging their vehicles. A group known as the Earth Liberation Front has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks on dealerships in which cars and property worth millions of dollars have been damaged.
Now the American International Automobile Dealers Association want to hit back at those that are attacking them. They claim that these actions are more than just arsonists, but terrorists and should be treated as such when caught.
The ELF's own website confirms that it's members have been involved in the following actions:
- Arcadia, California - Rusnak Mercedes Benz. Ten SUVs were spraypainted with "terrorist," "killer," and "ELF".
- Duarte, California - Duarte Mitsubishi. The dealership building and approximately twenty vehicles were painted with "ELF" and the phrases "gross polluter" and "We (heart) pollution".
- West Covina, California. An early morning fire ripped through a GM autodealership, destroying and damaging several SUVS including several Hummer H2s. A warehouse on the site was also destroyed by fire. Messages left at the scene there included "I (heart) Pollution," "American Wastefullness" and "ELF".
The Earth Liberation Front is an international underground organization that damages property in the name of stopping the destruction of the natural environment. Since 1997, the ELF in North America has caused over $100 million in damages to companies that it claims profit from "the destruction of life and the planet".
