There's a boat and a hovercraft in a channel of water.

The water flows at the same speed as the vessels but in the opposite direction to their travel.


Would the boat move forwards?
Would the hovercraft move forwards?


ETA. the boat is powered by a conventional propellor.

How is the boat propelled? Sail, engine + propellor?

Given that a hovercraft can move equally well on stationery land, it isn't going to have a problem with water regardless of the direction it's flowing.

Probably wrong but:

A boat with an engine and propellor is propelled by 'pushing' the water behind it, right? If the water is already flowing in this direction, won't the water already moving that way help it along more?

Or does it negate the spin of the propellor because the body of water is moving 'under' the boat rather being 'pushed' behind it?

Foreward motion of the boat is by water propulsion.
Hovercraft is air propulsion.

In practice the hovercraft would be impeded but would move ahead of the boat.

I suppose smile

Boat stationary; hovercraft moves.

But here's another.
A 1 ton boat displaces an amount of water equal to its mass.
A 1 ton helicopter is free flying and when flying normally over water does not displace any water.

How much water does a 1 ton hovercraft displace?

Seawater or fresh?

The amount equal to the downthrust of the engines, more than one ton.

if the water has a speed then both hovercraft and boat have a speed so neither can be stationary

Kill the chicken, then the fox, put them both onto the boat with the corn. The wolf can just piss off.
