front anti roll bar upgrade?
Discussion
Hi Mike,
Mmm are you still on a standard anti roll bar then? - I was wondering whether it is because the anti roll bar has gone soft or whether the anti roll bar bushes are knackered - they are the original rubber ones (11 years old) and very soft. Maybe I will try them first
Mine is on Nitrons but with standard springs - i think they are 300lbs - this won't be helping - so the front is very soft. This is both good and bad - the turn into hairpins is unbelievable, i rarely get understeer and carry much more speed into and through the slow corners than my competitors but on fast bends the roll is massive - look at the photo on the front page of the TVRCC speed championship website of me at Castle Combe in Oct and you will see what I mean.
cheers
Jes

My anti roll bar is the standard one which also has knackered bushes. Changing them this weekend.
I'm on 800lb springs on the front so i suppose thats where the difference is. However i used to have 600lb springs with a different make of shock before. With this set up it used to have loads of roll and understeer. The ohlins made a huge difference!
The car is definatly better without the rear anti roll bar aswell.

Yes - I know. What I mean is that, generally speaking, the front ARB has a greater effect on roll at the rear and vice versa.
Imagine coming into a hard right hand bend, either on the brakes or coming off the throttle hard. The front left nearside of the car wants to pitch towards the floor. This in turn lifts the rear offside wheel. Having a stiffer front anti roll bar will reduce this tendency.
Conversely, accelerating hard out of a right hand bend, the rear of the car wants to squat and lift the front off side wheel. A stiffer rear ARB will reduce this tendency.
I was just trying to point out that, if you have a car which rolls too much on the front, then really you ought to be looking to stiffen the rear ARB rather than the front one - assuming there aren't other problems to correct first!
