Hi to everyone, from a PH newbie! I have been offered a nice Z4 2.5 with 110k km (something like 80k miles i think) on the clock, 2003 model, in nice condition. So I wanted to hear your opinions on the following matter.

Are theses engines reliable?? Should the high mileage of the car worry me, or is this engine capable of going on forever, if propably maintained? Are there any common problems associated with the high number of miles, that I should know about?? Would you buy a Z4 with so many miles?

Thank you in advance!

80k miles is not high mileage. The car in question has an M54 engine.

My 5 Series also has an M54 engine. It's slightly larger but the design is the same. It has now covered 160k miles.

I hope this answers your question.

How much have you been offered it for? I would imagine you'd be looking at 7-8k for one of the earliest 2.5s with that sort of mileage.

But i dont see that as high mileage as long as you can vouch for how it has been looked after.

110kms is 68k miles which is not high. If well maintained with regular oil changes with good quality oil, the engine will probably go to 200,000 miles or 320,000 kms, honestly. yes

I'd get a 3.0 as even that isn't blisteringly quick... the 2.5 may feel a tad slow for the type of car it is (imho)

Also more standard kit, and not much higher running costs smile

High mileage on any BMW from the last 20 years is about 200,000+ or so I'm told. Less than 100k isn't even run in yet! Make sure its been serviced well and you should be fine

yes Both of my old ones had 200k on the clock on the engines were still going strong.

Thank you for all the replies! I am quite relief, as judging from your replies, I can be assured that if well maintained, a Z4 can run perfectly well for at least 100.000 more km without any real issues!

Apart from the engine, guys, in what else should I pay attention to, in a high mileage Z4?? How can I be sure that the mileage is genuine? Is the Z4 mileage number easy to manipulate?

and further back than 20 years. i know someone with an E21 320i (same M10 as i have in mine, just bored out to a 2litre from the 1.8 i have) and it's covered over 420k miles and he says the engine still takes a beating.

now THAT is proper build quality.

The engine will never be the thing to worry about most in a higher mileage BMW.
