teg type-r to....... ?
Discussion
I am very seriously thinking about chopping in the teg for something a bit different. I am going to stay Jap for reliability reasons, and after doing much thought about it, I've got it down to two options.
I love the teg, but after that and several hot hatches, I think its time to do the RWD thing, and I have two potential candidates in mind...
1. The Sports car: Toyota MR2 Turbo. Plus sides: looks, performance, huge midrange shove. Down sides: Possibly edgey handling? Still only 4 cylinders, lack of practicality (not a huge issue though).
2. The "Muscle" car: Nissan Skyline R33 GTS-T. Plus sides: Practical, comfortable, muscular, glorious sounding straight-6 turbo engine, Down sides: Bland without a body kit, very thirsty, potentially huge running costs and insurance?
So it comes down to these, or something else? Scooby / Evo? I get the feeling they might be TOO capable, and no doubt you'd need a highly tuned variant to come anywhere near close to even lightly breathed on Skylines or MR2Ts...

200SX Turbo, S14a, preferably. www.sxoc.com. It's not by mistake that most drifters choose them. Get the back end out and hold it there, even if you didn't intend to. All day. Until you run out of petrol.

What gives you that impression? A standard STi or Evo would eat a standard GTS-T or MR2T and they're just as easy to mod.Agreed with your point about being potentially too competent though, once you start to have some fun and push them a bit you really do end covering ground very quickly. The MR2T especially would be a more involving drive at lower speeds.
hi mate i kinda did the same thing, i went from a ek9 type r civic to a rev 4 mr2 turbo, what you say is on the money yourself really, totally different from what you have now. as long as you show an inch of common sense in the wet then you will never have any handling issues with an mr2, its just people driving too fast for the conditions. build quality is very very good as you'd expect from toyota and i haven't had any major issue with mine apart from servicing.
the worst part is going from vtec to turbo because when you put the foot down and you hear the turbo spool up behind you, your head thinks its vtec so automatically i was thinking i only have 3-4 secs before i have to change gear again, where as you have a lot longer in each gear in a turbo, took me about a bloody month to get used to it!!
p.s. fuel economy is'nt bad either pretty much on a par with my old ek9..... until you boot it anyway!!

Stock, an mr2 turbo will be faster than an evo or sti in the equivalent price range. Personally i find the MR2 to be much sportier than a 200sx unless the Nissan is on rock hard suspension and running lots of boost - at which point they are a bit scary for me. the MR2 with engine and turbo noises right behind your head, and real "cockpit" driving position all do it for me more than the more "GT" 200sx.
An Evo4 is probably worth a drive though...personally i would look at an Evo, STi RA, or an MR2 turbo if you want something that feels a bit more special - the R33 GTST feels a bit lik a big 200sx to me rather than a nimble machine like the Teg you are used to.
Obviously mods change things, but unless you live in a bit of england with glass smooth roads coilovers will shake your teeth out.

I was in a similar position but did it the other way around......ie Impreza Sti V 7 to a DC5 Teg...I love the teg, but after that and several hot hatches, I think its time to do the RWD thing, and I have two potential candidates in mind...

The Impreza was v quick (circa 330 bhp) but didnt really make for an exciting drive...would recommend getting one as it was a great all round car.
The Teg (although 100bhp down) puts more of a smile on my face when going for a b road blast, and feels like it could be driven hard all day without any problems....I am not too sure that the Impreza would be the same. I was always worrying about the turbo going pop.
If you are going to change from the DC2(which will be a very hard car to replace anyway) I would recommend looking towards RWD. I got sucked into the big power AWD thing and tbh all I found interesting about the car was the straight line speed.....this wears off very quickly.
With RWD it gives you the opportunity to learn a different way of driving (from hot hatches) and I am sure you will find it a rewarding experience.
The best fun I have had was from one of the slowest cars I have owned (E30 325i) That car could put a smile (or look of terror!) on your face at 20mph...off camber roundabouts were interesting to say the least!
I would look at keeping the DC2 and getting a cheap rwd car (e30, e36, mx5,etc) then you can have the best of both worlds!
Good luck.

I sold my DC2 3 years ago to trade up to a VX220 Turbo, as I'd always wanted to experience RWD, but I just never got on with the car - it didn't have the same ability to be taken by the scruff of the neck and driven hard. The S2 Exige I have now is what I should have gone for in the first place, in fact I often describe the DC2 as like a FWD Exige. I do still miss the ITR though, so much so I'm considering buying another...Not sure what your budget would be, but hanging onto the Teg and going for something like an MX5/Mk1 MR2 would be a good option to see how you get on with RWD - I bought a Mk1 MR2 for £1K and had a lot of fun with it, while still using the Integra as a daily driver. Personally I would prefer not to go back to a more heavyweight car after owning my DC2/MR2/VX/Exige.
Nooooo Paul!
My significant other (car) is a Version IV STi Type RA and while obviously it is somewhat quicker (okay, a lot quicker) than my DC2, I honestly prefer driving the Teg, particularly on the track. It just inspires a hell of a lot more confidence, which probably says more about my lack of driving skills than anything else. Something along the lines of an Evo V / VI would probably represent something of a happy medium - Scooby pace, but with more of the raw, interactive edge of the Integra. You may well be right Ben... perhaps I've just become too familiar with the car for my own good.
I just found the Evos a lot more intuitive when it comes to placing the car on the road and picking a line through a corner. But, again, that probably says more about me as a driver than anything else.
P.S. I've taken your advice - these cars are the s
t on gravel!!!

Nothing will be as quick round the roads here, and inspire as much confidence as your DC2 does Paul.
RWD is more about the feeling of driving that setup than going for something that will be quicker.
Don't get caught trying to go for something that looks quicker on paper, get something that feels more fun to drive.

Indeed, which is why I have decided that I think I will go for a Mk2 MR2 V6 as soon as I can sell the teg RWD is more about the feeling of driving that setup than going for something that will be quicker.

I've been seduced by watching youtube videos of woodsport converted MR2s.
Although a Mk1 is probably more fun, but then, finding one that isnt a rustbucket is probably easier said than done I guess!

Aye, good Mk1's are extremely hard to find these days and you'd not be too chuffed living with a mk1 after the teg.
Good news on the V6 though. I take it you'll be coming to us for the work? Or are you going to try and buy a ready converted car?
Yep I certainly would be going to you guys for the work, seems a no brainer frankly.Good news on the V6 though. I take it you'll be coming to us for the work? Or are you going to try and buy a ready converted car?
If I do go for one I reckon I might have to have it supercharged though. In the meantime the teg needs some tlc before I can do anything else.Gassing Station | Japanese Chat | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
