January 2009 Photo Competition - Winners!
Discussion
It's been fun watching the images roll in, some really great ones, some interesting ones and two of a cat(?)
anyway the winners are:
3rd Place - I really liked that someone managed to get a light-hearted image in from a seemingly dark topic. This made me laugh, it's a fun image!
From Viggen114

2nd Place - this really caught my eye, the blacks are so black and it's interesting that the irregular shapes of the broken glass still form an eerie pattern!
From 9.3

1st Place - Although I never usually feel heavily photoshopped images fit within the Photo competition, this composition of two images really work together and best fits the theme. Really portrays some pain, well done!

Congrats to all the winners! And thanks to everyone who submitted.

Stacey, its still a photo just 2 photos cleverly blended together
If you didn’t have a computer you wouldn't have been able to produce the image. Don’t get me wrong, I love the end product but it isn't a photograph.

Thanks for the 2nd place, (much appreciated!), but I have to admit that having photographed it, I too used a computer to enhance the image........
Of course you did, we all do. It's no different to changing the developing process slightly for film. The JPG or RAW file is no different to a negative. Uploading your JPG straight to Flickr is akin to using Snappy Snaps to develop and print your negatives - they just stick them through a machine with no skill involved. Post processing in Photoshop is just like having a professional develop your film, or doing it yourself in a darkroom. I side with Stacey on this one, great image but not a photograph IMHO.
Tweaking the levels, cropping et al are a long way from splicing two separate images together.
Had the cracked mud been projected onto the model and the photograph been taken then it'd be fine in my book.
But of course it's not down to me, it's down to Rossatron who won the right to judge last month as he sees fit.
A bit of controversy always spices things up a touch, so congrats to Stigmund and I look forward to the competition this month.

As I said I usually don't think heavily shopped photos have a place in the competition but this one looked like just two images overlayed - I'm sure it would have been possible in the olden days of ye film?
Perhaps not - still I thought it was the most fitting picture for the theme. Quite a few other entries had some form of photoshopping, selective colour and the like - where would you draw the line? (something to discuss i suppose

Yes, stig's photograph would have been possible in the olden days of film. I'd have thought a simple double exposure in he darkroom or sandwiching of film would have achieved a similar result.Perhaps not - still I thought it was the most fitting picture for the theme. ) As someone who was a film photographer for about 15 years I have no qualms about the use of image manipulation software in these competitions. I think that the visual and technical quality will shine through regardless as will the concept. Image manipulation is just a tool to achieve ends that could be done in the darkroom and its use is a skill in its own right. It isn't cheating. And let's not forget that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Ah I tend to agree that what I did makes it more art than photograph but the rules dont state you can't be creative
If you let grapes sour they turn from wine into vinegar
Lets' face it, we're not doing reportage here or social documentary where manipulation would bring ethics of manipulation into question. And we all know how images can be manipulated through cropping, by being taken out of context, use of text with image to imply a specific meaning. Photography is an art form.
