It's loooked on as an Americanism which winds many PHers up (including me, it has to be said, sometimes). Having said that, it is, in fact, a very old English word which has fallen out of use this side opf the Atlantic although we do use derivatives of it without undue concern being expressed (e.g. forgotten, begotten).
