Was out yesterday for a bit of a scooch and took it to the limit in second third and fourth, I could smell burning, a bit like clutch. any one got any ideas what it might be?

Erm, if you were ragging it, and it smells of burnt clutch, then could it perhaps be... a burned out clutch? tongue out

Have you given it a check to see if it's slipping Noel?

the revs and speed seemed to match, although I dumped the clutch fairly hard, As you most likely know I'm not the most tech minded person, I sometimes find it hard to select gear when driving slowly when the car is hot, dunno if this has anything to do with it?

If you clutch dumped then that's usually enough to get the clutch smelling a bit. When doing motorkhana stuff in mine or a full blast standing start there's usually a couple of minutes thereafter where the clutch smells a bit warm smile

Mine smells like burning oil every night when I put it away (usually after a small rag on the home stretch) - it has got worse since I changed the exhaust?

Oil levels fine, so not too concerned? Also, you can get a bit of clutch burn without knackering it - my 997 used to get that way after a bit of abuse, but fine once it had cooled a bit.

Very likely you just gave it a bit of a cooking with that technique, although the gear selection may point to a worn clutch. Could just be the linkage however. How many miles has the car done now?

Good way to check if it's on the way out or not is to park up with the engine running and put the handbrake on. Then select 1st gear and bring it upto the biting point, then go a little past that and the back of the car should hunker down and it'll almost stall (remember not to let it do that). If it doesn't feel like it's about to stall, and doesn't pull down, but the engine speed stays constant, it's a fair bet that the clutch is worn.
