What is it with this country?!

A bit of snow, and the whole country goes to pot! No one can driver properly, public transport ceases and people whinge about how cold they are.....
No doubt, come the summer, the country's infrastructure will collapse because it's too hot!
How on earth do they cope on the continent where it's even colder in the winter

It does not matter here if we get 3 inches or 3 feet of snow.. when the temp gets below 5c summer tyres go hard and lose grip, whether that be laying snow or just cold wet conditions, that's why people just skate off the road..
In Scandinavia you have to have winter tyres fitted by law between the months of November and March I think? some have studded tyres also..
You don't need winter tyres for just snow, it's any cold conditions that you would need them for.. I put mine on last yr when I went to visit a friend in Sweden, took them off again for the summer and put them back on in December last yr.. I will change them when it warms up again..
More times than not a set of winter tyres will be less than your XS on the insurance..
The problem is that snow is no few, and far between that it is just not worth having the proper gear for it. As such, everyone struggles. Where I am in the US we get tens of feet of snow every year, so people have snow tyres, and the ploughs are, I believe, second to none. It takes an absolute blizzard of biblical proportions to actually stop folk from doing much.

Essentially the same here, however I still marvel after the first snowfall at the hundreds of fender benders around town as people remember what happens to grip in winter. It's really quite amazing how stupid people can be. And we did call in the army a few years ago to help us shovel... last winters first snow...

I'm in Waterloo.
Snow tyres are worth their weight in gold!
It's a great place, I was sick of the politics, nannying and taxation of the UK so decided to move abroad, I love it here.
Canada has it's faults too don't get me wrong, but the people are amazing, I actually love the weather (proper seasons -30C to +30C ha ha) and the quality of life is great.

It's not just this country, there is obviously some British genes alive and well in Australia (Melbourne) where a few days of hot weather have almost the same effect as cold days in the UK. Trains stop working, power blackouts, people whinging it's too hot, air-conditioners not working on trains etc etc.

If my circumstances had allowed I'd have moved over there by now. Like you say, proper seasons too
Much as I wish one of the girls had stayed here I can fully understand why she went home and settled there. The other I grew up with here and she moved out there after Uni and got married to a local. All very happy there.iluvmercs said:

A bit of snow, what planet are you on, it's minus 5C, the snow ploughs are out and not even making a dent in it with the main roads 6 inches deep. This isn't just a bit of snow, I haven't seen anything like this since 1985.

You've got to laugh at how crap this country is at dealing with such trivial, minor things...like the bloody weather.
There are some funny youtube vids up already showing how the public drive...

Because we don't see it that often do we. why would we want to spend money on special tyres for our cars and lots of other dedicated clearing equipment that may only get used once in 20 years. There are some funny youtube vids up already showing how the public drive...
