Surely you mean why are they affected IN THE UK............
I used to live in Canada, things don't stop for a little snow, or else the country would grind to a halt for a few months a year.
So there is no choice but to deal with it in Canada. In the UK there is a fine balance in how much money to spend preparing for things that might only happen once every few years.I used to live in Canada, things don't stop for a little snow, or else the country would grind to a halt for a few months a year.

more to the point why are buses cocked up... i managed to get from MK to the west end this morning but people can't get here from other bits of london!
I imagine the reason buses are not running is becuse bus drivers don't live onboard the bus and as such have to get to work in the morning. If they can't make it through the snow then they cant drive the bus...briSk said:

Leighton Buzzard into Euston was no problem for me either. Walking from Euston to Russell Square was a different kettle of fish - I slipped over a couple of times! (Trainers tomorrow me thinks!).
Just keeping an eye on the train timetable - a lot seem to be cancelled going back the other way.

It is just an excuse, much like the leaves on the track. A good excuse for the rail operators to get money out of NR.

My bugbear is why do so many schools close just because of a bit of snow - it happens every time a few flakes appear in the sky. Most other people manage to get to work FFS !
At a guess because schools fear the wide range of snow related accidents and the inevitable compensation claims that would follow. elster said:

Picking up electricity is the main issue; stopping the damn things on slippery rails the second (and lesser) issue.
South Eastern, Southern and South West Trains are hit hardest due to their ground level third rail power supply.
The MPV De-icers work fantastically!!!! South Eastern, Southern and South West Trains are hit hardest due to their ground level third rail power supply.
They manage throughout Europe perfectly fine, believe me I worked with Socofer developing them.
It is an excuse.
