How many snow ploughs can you but for 2.4 billion

According to several reports todays snow has cost us 1.2 billion. It will cost the same tomorrow. So how much to prepare properly? Also bendy busses in London useless in snow. What a shock that is. As to TFL not sending any busses out, have they never heard of chains. What a health and safety cock up.

I'v never had to but a snow plough, but i'd have a go for 2.4billion

Apparently its the worst snowfall the south east has suffered in 18 years and the worst London has had for more then 45 years, so do you suggest that TFL force the bus operators to spend £300 upwards per bus just in case a 40 year event happens ?

The decision not to send buses out will have been based on the road safety element and the fact that many of the drivers would not have been able to get to work to start with.

I have a horrid feeling that we'd all still be blaming someone if a volcano erupted in Central London.

Ah it is only nearly 15 years here in Yorkshire, so that would be 14 in proper human years.

In Lincolnshire it is nearly 8 years, which I make it as 7 years also.

Also plenty of tractors can strap them on easily.

I heard that too. They said it was the same cost as a Bank Holiday, so all Brown has to do is cancel a few Bank Holidays to get the money back. He's so unpopular that he's got nothing to lose...

Few more gritters, and not just on the main roads wouldn't go amiss though. I blame the lack of grit as a factor. Lots more people could get to work if they could get to the main roads.

They were taking about this on R4 today.

Although the cost may be high a large percentage of this will be made up later in the week.

For example, lots of people will have avoided shopping today but they will still go shopping in a couple of days and will probably spend more to make up for what they didnt buy today.
If somebody didnt go to work today you could argue that they lost 0.5% of a years working income. But in reality most people will be able to catch up the majority of what they didnt do today when they get back to work.

These sorts of statistics must be very innacurate and I think they are only quoted to make a news story.

Don't worry your head is functioning correctly.
That is what they do here, plough attatchment on the front of a truck, lorry to you
On the back of the truck they a;so have a hopper attatchment that throws out salt or grit.

In the UK I would imagine the problem would be where to plough it to.

I love the way we had at least 4 days to prepare and noone made any effort to prepare themselves.

This doesnt just mean the councils,but drivers also.

Aha, I was as I was questioning the OP's comments about buses in London and use of snow chains.

I flew from Geneva to Heathrow T5 last night. Geneva was of course unaffected. LHR was paralysed. It took 20 minutes to get us onto a stand, then 15 minutes waiting on the stand to get a jetty and then 45 minutes for our bags (with no announcements).

Then after an hour I got a taxi and started the journey home. The M4 hadn't been cleared, so we had to negotiate oir way through several crashes. Kensington & Chelsea have sceased to grit or plough according to my taxi driver, so their roads were inches deep in snow and very difficult to pass. The driver had to judge his approach to uphill traffic lights in order not to have to stop. Westminster had done a better job and then Camden had excelled themselves, so that the part of the (nionety minute journey) the taxi driver had most dreaded, the hill up to Hampstead and then beyond was no problem at all.

The gritter that went past me this morning was making the gritting sound, but not actually spitting any grit out, despite having grit onboard by the looks of it. Nothing like the council workers taking pride in their job or anything.
