Schools out ???

My eldest 2 kids (15&13)got sent home from school today as the school was closing due to health and safety (the snow )but my youngest (7) was in school all day, WTF .
Nanny state ,useless.

My school was shut today and according to the website, they're probably closing tomorrow too.

Entirely predictable I'm afraid. Child slips on ice, bashes head, blood, parents want compensation, school gets sued. It's wrong but that's what happens.

Well I got an email from the council I work for saying heavy snow was expected tonight, possibly 20cm by the morning (ermmm it's 20cm already!!!)
They expect all employees to make their way to work, on time, tomorrow. In other words no schools will be shut ... mind you there could be an atomic bomb go off and they'd still expect to see you at work.
Seemingly it's not a severe weather warning till the CE says so.

However I'm not working tomorrow anyway!

It's not just that. Snow = less kids arriving which equals a poor attendance figure for that day which then drags down the average. It's better for the numbers if they just shut up shop completely.

There is also an issue with staff/kid ratios, the school is not legally allowed to open if this is breached (apparently).

Also, snow = some staff will inevitably not make it in, this means large amounts of manpower are needed to arrange cover and rearrange timetables, this can very often mean the kids don't actually learn anything.

All these factors conspire to giving the kids a day off it it snows, sad but true.

Be honest though, do you not remember school closures when you were a kid as beings gifts from heaven? I do and I would like to think my kids get the odd treat like that every now and then.

we run coaches on school contracts .......... 1 school called before their coaches left to cancelthem lots of calls from others are you tuning up .......... yes we are. only after we went round the village routes and got the kids to school did they let us know they had closed. One said we don't have enough staff to saty open starnge how we had 20 + drivers turn up (no no shows) and we got the kids to school.

It also relies on the head having a pair of balls, and calling it either way in good time.

I got a text message this morning to tell me that due to adverse weather conditions the school would not be open today, this was at 9.30am young limey leaves to catch the bus at 8.05am nice one idiots.

Our school rarely closed due to snow. Though one year the central heating broke down and the head sent us home, it was a tad chilly...

Notice that all schools will stay with a skeleton staff, apparently has something to do with if they all go home, no-one gets paid.

Unfortunately this isn't a new thing, they used to close my school when I was there, over 10 years ago now, at the first sign of any snow, only happened 3 times in the 5 years I was there though.

I went to school over thirty miles on one bus and two trains in the early/ mid sixties, through the big freeze of 1963, never missed a day, schools were never closed in those days for trivial reasons.....(fair enough if the central heating has broken down) and in those days snow was snow...

Still, good excuse for teachers to have the day off........
