Dear All,

further to my Monaro purchase
( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ) and talking to insurers
(useful threads in the FAQ and http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... )
I need variously a Thatcham approved immobiliser and/or alarm and/or tracker.

Can anyone recommend a system and/or fitter in the Bristol (where I am) or Swansea (where the vendor lives) areas, please? Also any cricket pitch costs?
There are so many choices it would be great to reduce that to a short list with your help,

regards,
Jet

I feel your pain. I couldn't get a decent insurance quote without being part of the Thatcham Club. Ended up asking the insurance co who was their preferred supplier and what products were acceptable to get me into the club. Don't have all the details to hand, but their installer drove out from London to my work carpark in Newbury to do the job. Installed in less than 1 hour for less than £200.

(It's an ignition immobiliser with key fob transmitter and a funky flashing led sitting on top of the steering column)

Yeah, that's what I thought. You've gotta be impressed at a flashing LED. I mean, it could be on or it could be off, but this sucker does both...in sequence!

I am just sorting my insurance for a VXR8 and the immobiliser question has been asked. The Vauxhall website does not seem very helpful so could anyone let me know whether it will have a Thatcham cat immoboliser as standard? A Tracker is also required but that will be sorted no problem.

Thanks

Hi I had this problem with mine nearly two years ago when I got it, I went onto the VX website and copied the alarm spec and sent it to the insurer. The R8 is fitted with a Thatcham Cat 2 immobiliser as standard. I had a Cobra Trak fitted as well. Trust this helps....................Chris.

That's a result. Getting the Thatcham spec on the CV8 was like getting a straight answer from a politician ie. theoretically possible but no-one knows if it's ever been achieved. The response from Vauxhall customer services suggested they were on work experience and when I called Thatcham (they collate all this stuff) I was passed through to 'the lab'. Wasn't up for talking about physics so dumped it back on the insurance company to find a way off the merry-go-round.

I solved this problem by going with an insurance mob that didn't require anything other than the factory alarm/immobilizer.
A plan. And they covered the mods too.

Dear All,

A-plan wanted Thatcham approved for me, might depend on which underwriter they choose. Looks like I'm going with Greenlight though best price and reasonable additional security requirement. I've also made a security choice PM me if you want to know what,

Jet

Just to update, the insurers were eventually satisfied so no more worries. Insurance will expire 31/03 anyway so probably time to look around a bit before then.

Dear SimonV8ster,

not much to add.
Went with Greenlight as I suggested I might - least stupid additional security requirements and competitive quote.
The additional security was fitted at my workplace when I needed it.

The modifications are the killer to any reasonable deal redface

Jet

I tried a couple of brokers and could not find any particular deals. The issue was not so much the premium but a hefty excess. I do not normally deal with insurance for the work car but I think the renewal was around the £900 mark, so not too bad really. It seems that the excess is due to it being parked on the street and looks like something we will have to live with until I get my gate/ garden/ garage sorted out. Needs to be done anyway so I can get all 3 motors together in time for summer blatting and hooning.

Generally for insuring my own motors I use Bickley Insurance as I have insured the Ferrari with them for 5 years now and every time I looked for cheaper quotes elsewhere I could not beat them. Having said that normal insurers do not seem to understand Caterhams so that is insured through MSM and only costs £200 all in.

Thanks guys, played the insurance lottery game today. Sick and tired of phoning people up and answering questions !!.

Picking up my car tonight which is pretty much the same spec as yours I think Jet Noise.

Tried Greenlight (most expensive £799) only do quotes via the web and wouldn't talk to me until I had completed the online form. Tried Adrian Flux (previously been insured with them on and off for the last 15 or so years), was told it was a great deal, included a 10% discount as I was a member of Pistonheads as they are the approved insurance dealer, had the hard sell and was told it could go up the next day if I did not take it out there and then (£775).

Tried SkyInsurance who were helpful and quoted me £672 straight off with all mods declared, £400 excess, protected NC, etc.

Went back to the 'great deal' that was Adrian Flux who somehow came down to £665 as I was a previous customer and had experience of powerful rear wheel drive cars (told them that at the beginning).

Back to Sky who then said 'We want you as a customer so we can do a deal' £650. Best I think I can expect really considering the mods.

Answered loads of questions from Goldcrest but they never returned the call (up until now anyway).

A-Plan tried to help but couldn't match any of the quotes.

Some classic questions from Insurers who deal with special/modified cars -

What car is it please ?
A Vauxhall Monaro.
Is that a van ?
No.

A Vauxhall Nouvarno ?
No, a Vauxhall Monaro.
Oh, haven't heard of one of those before, is it an import ?.
No. Its a UK car - Vauxhall Monaro. You insure other drivers with the same car.
Really ?
Yes.

I'm not looking forward to next year. banghead
