New Photography Competition Rule?
Discussion
Afternooning Guys
Just an idea, not sure if it has ben discussed before.
Anybody can ruffle through their HD and find a suitable image for a competition.
How about a rule whereas the photo must have been taken in the required month. Thus giving the guys something to go out and attempt. It stops the pro's using past work and the amateurs can go out for a practice.
You couldn't really police it as such but hopefully the entrants would be trustworthy enough.
Those in favour say aye' .
Cheers

The way the competition is currently run the judge has a chance to set a few ground rules for the month, for example they can stipulate minimal post-processing. Not everyone in here will always have a chance to shoot something for a particular topic every month, many of us have families and / or jobs that make it difficult to get out with our cameras for lengths of time.
This topic has been discussed a few times previously and the general consensus has always been to leave it as it is and if a particular judge wishes to impose a rule of only photo's taken that month they can. By the way, it's fairly easy to check when a photo was taken as long as the EXIF information stays intact.

I suggested this a while ago, and as Dogsey says the conclusion was in favour of leaving it open rather than stipulating it had to be taken this month.
Must say, with two little kids now, I ain't got enough free time to go and shoot something specifically for the comps.
I do hope you'll be entering this month ... I can think of one photo of yours that would go down very well! Must say, with two little kids now, I ain't got enough free time to go and shoot something specifically for the comps.

Back a few years ago when the competitions started I always used to go out with the specific purpose of taking photos for the theme that month. When I realised most people were just picking out stuff from the archives to enter I gave up on the competitions altogether.
If you want to be inspired to get out there places like dpchallenge are good for that, and they require you to have taken the photo in that month.
The PH compo is great, but to me it's really there as a chance to trot out old photos you are proud of rather than to inspire creativity.
Perhaps I'm just being grumpy today!

Dobbo you are being a bit grumpy!
I'm in a similar boat to most, 3 kids, job etc. I do however try if at all possible to take something that month, sometimes I just don't have anything relevant for the competition and I don't submit.
But practicalities are a must, if we could ONLY submit photos in the month, it might be a short competition.

I haven't eared any money from photography for well over a year, if that's a description of Pro.
None of the shots I posted up in the discussion thread have ever been sold or were shot for money. In the candids one shot was taken with a 1 megapixel video camera and another with a 2 megapixel point and shoot camera. I haven't entered the competition since I won it last year (the only time I've won despite years of entering before) as I was accused of always winning it. I have however put shots up in the discussion threads.

Is there a rule on not entering a shot you've already entered once before though? I'll definately enter something anyway.
I haven't been out with my camera for almost 3 months. Except for at weekends, I've not seen much daylight due to the hours I've been working, and my weekends are plenty busy enough with everything else I need to do.
For me, photography is a hobby, not a living, and it has to share space with both real-life and my other hobbies. I enter the competitions on here when I've got something worthwhile (not that often - and I've been in the top-3 only once), so to bring that rule in would pretty-much preclude me entering any of the competitions. I strongly suspect I am not alone in this.
So no - that rule would restrict the comps on here to the pro's, the self-employed, and the students. Hardly fair...and as mentioned above, if you're THAT bothered, go onto a dedicated photo forum and enter their competitions.

I agree, it would be nice to have a little challenge to make me get out there and be creative but it's not really practical with the number of users on PH
Possibly try http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/

I can very nearly predict after seeing the topic what photographs will have a repeat showing from some users.
I think "no repeat entries" isn't a bad one...there've been a couple of times I've been tempted but haven't because it doesn't seem right to keep submitting the same few 'very good' pics.I can very nearly predict after seeing the topic what photographs will have a repeat showing from some users.

...the two new rule suggestions should encourage people to get their camera out and shoot a few pics.
Have you not read ANY of the replies - most of us have far more important things to do than go out at a whim and just take photos. It is a HOBBY!!!
