Any Nokia experts ?

Probably not the correct forum, but PH never seems to fail with any question thrown at it !

I have been given a Nokia N82, I wouldn't bother but it has a better camera and MP3 than my old Samsung U600 so I'd like to use it.

I live in Norway, and the old user had a Telenor SIM in it, I have a Netcom PAYG SIM. This shouldn't matter too much as as far as I can tell the Nokia isn't locked to any network. It fires up fine and can make and receive calls no problem.

The problem lies with sending an SMS (it receives them fine). It tries to send but fails. On my older phones it was simply a case of going to the SMS settings and entering the operators service centre number (in this case I need to enter [phone] for my carrier).

However I don't have this option, the 'Message Centre In Use' is defaulted as what translates to 'SIM Message Central' and I can't manually type in any number I want to.

After a google I downloaded 'Nemesis Service Suite' and 'Debranded' the phone, then performed a Nokia Software Update, so it should be now as if I just bought it SIM free from a shop. This however didn't solve the problem.

I know with MMS one needs to contact the operator to be sent settings, but I'm sure this isn't the case with a common or garden SMS.

If anyone could shed some light on this I'd be more than thankful, otherwise I just have a nice shiny paperweight.

Menu->Messaging->Options->Settings->Text message->Options->Open->Options->New message centre

Enter message centre name and number, save, set as default, and should be good to go.

.. Is what I assumed it would be, with this it's a case of :

1) Menu
2) Messaging

then there's no options so it's,

3) New Message
4) Text Message

now we can select

5) Options
6) Sending options
7) Message centre in use
8) Hit a brick wall as I cannot change from the default 'SIM Message Centre'

the message centre should be stored on the sim card and not on the phone, however on open OS phones such as Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile the SC number can potentially be cached and stored locally.

Your best bet is to perform a full reset (back to factory settings), then the phone will be purged of any stored settings from telenor and should read the SC number from your SIM card the first time you boot it and use that. you can then download your MMS and interweb settings from either nokia or your Network from their provisioning settings.

on your homescreen, that should restore to factory settings, presuming the SIM has the right SC number then you should be in business.
