Found this just now. For those that were asking about the differences recently, this seems to give a very clear and accurate description and compares the different model quite well.

Whoa - SE30 in lurid purple please yes

But unlikely to find one, so an SV definitely would be the model of choice.

Thanks for the post Pete, very useful.

The GTR is not a road car, so irrelevant. The 6.0SE is still a 6.0. (think only a few in tht UK only anyway). There are various other limited edition variants of the base models not mentioned.

I thought it a nice, accurate, summary of the different base models without too much info over too many pages.

Don't recall seeing this info and nice pics before. I must of read just about everything on the web regarding the Diablo, especially the 6 vt. Always very frustrating as the technical info is so easy to find but build numbers per model seems impossible to establish. I understand many factory records where destroyed under the orders of a right 'Bobby Dazler' (English) who was running the show at the time!!

yea, 3 in the UK. Mostly tiny cosmetic differences really.

"The usual Alpine system was now upgraded into the latest available DVD audio/navigation system which could hold either the complete European roadmaps or the United States maps, depending on where the car was sold.

The multiple Carbon Fiber parts visible on either the outside or inside this special Diablo were now threaded with special titanium making these parts even more glossy than before, the same titanium finishing was used on the surrounds on the dashboard dials and for the gearlever and even the grid it could be moved in.

The performance levels remained the same as on the Diablo VT 6.0, but some details were changed however, the intake manifolds and the cylinder-head covers were now finished in magnesium to save weight and in the mean time draw the attention to the highly technical aspects of this magnificent V12 engine.

To be able to offer the best possible acceleration performance the Diablo VT 6.0 Special Edition was fitted with the short-ratio gearing.
Another minor detail was the fact that the Brembo logo on the brakes was replaced by a real Lamborghini logo, maybe not too visible, but the details are important when it comes to the entire look and feel of such a fabulous piece of workmanship."

Hi Jon. You still on for the weekend? Only the acceleration numbers may be questionable. But at least they are all from documented road tests from mags. This that particular figure is a bit suspect but at least the source is mentioned. A;; the figures (bar that 3.4) seem quite a bit slower than lambos claimed figures. Probably for good reason. Yeah, we need to add our A3 road test figure wink

Ok ... so here is my position (for those who don't already know).

I am on my second, and very good F348. I originally lusted after a Testarossa 512TR but then swayed towards an F550 as, a) I do like GTs, b) they are beautiful looking cars, c) Vicki would actually like it and d) it would arguably be more user friendly than the TR. The only downside is that they are fairly subtle cars and I think some of the "sense of occasion" would be lost.

The TR is, to my mind, just a bigger version of what I already have but, it is one of the iconic Ferraris and I believe it is firmly at the bottom of it's value curve with only one way to go.

THEN I HAD THIS REALLY STUPID IDEA!

To me, the Diablo is one of the absolute top Supercars in the world. A worthy successor to the Countach with more presence than the newer Murcielagos and Gallardos. I cannot imagine me ever having a more supercar-like supercar.

I was planning to get one maybe in a couple of years, after the F550, hence why I even asked Phil to let me know when he gets bored of his.

However, I think that like the TR, Diablo prices are practically as low as they will ever go. They won't stay like this for ever and if I'm not careful, in two years time I might not be able to afford one.

My concern is mainly down to reliability. I had several chats with a very good and trusted friend last night. This friend has worked with high end and classic performance cars for many years and knows more about the workings of the internal combustion engine than anyone else I know. He is also fairly objective and I trust his opinion.

These were some of his comments:

"Blimey Al. Now there's a proper car! 5.7 quad cam V12. Gorgeous thing! No problem to maintain but not as well built as your Ferrari. Still should be fine though if you get a good one"

I then asked in what way not as well built

" Well, Diablo - last proper Lambp, truly special but not completely robust. F550/575 well built, reliable transcontinentals. Still special but not in the same league as the Diablo in terms of presence."

His opinion concurs with what I have heard from you guys, in that the main components are solid, it is usually niggly things that go wrong. This is the bit that worried me a little ... (but seeing as I'm posting this you can see I'm not too worried though smile )

"If I was on a Euro road trip (such as MegaHoon) I'd rather be in the Ferrari. Unlikely that the Diablo would completely let you down, but it's almost certain that something would stop working at some point".

So, after all this rambling, I would really like HONEST opinions from owners that have used their Diablos not for weekend meets at Virginia Waters or the annual show ... but have taken their cars on long, hard euro-trips. What are they like in the really twisty hairpins of the Alps for example. What are the brakes like coming DOWN the Alps (I would fit braided hoses and racing fluid anyway).

I know that Phil and Jan do this, but their cars are the later Audi era and are, as such, better built than the earlier pre-98 cars. It's the pre-98s that I'm interested in hearing honest objective opinions about.

It is unlikely to put me off, but I at least want to have some idea of what I'm going in to.

My rule of thumb with any car is - would I jump in it and drive to the south of Spain tomorrow - and it will need to be able to do this at some point.

Basically, a lot of buying a Diablo is done with the heart, I just don't want to end up with a very expensive car that looks great in the garage but that I daren't use properly.

Thanks for your patience and those that have emailed me. It is appreciated smile
