My 1999 996 C4 tip is going in for its 72k mile service tomorrow. My question is, what expensive problems are likely to occur as the mileage racks up (15k/year - it's not a 'garage queen')?

Should I just sell up now to pre-empt expensive bills? If I did, what would I get in a private sale (Full OPC history, sports exhaust, sports supension)?

Thanks for all advice!

How long is a piece of string?

All we can do is guess.

I would say that you will have a few more bills in the next 12 months, as every component of the car is a wear item if you give it enough use. Injectors tend to go at 100k miles, for example.

Maybe springs and dampers, second clutch will start to go, alternator and some ignition components. But very difficult to say.

The good news is that you've been using it lots. This always helps keep it reliable.

I would get the garage to value the car tomorrow, and see what they'd give you a) for cash and b) as a trade in. Then add between 2-4k to this figure to arrive at the possible private sale price.

My guess is they will offer low twenties.

This may be low enough to persuade you to keep the car (and keep the warranty going). However, if you want to quit while you're ahead, do so now, as 80k is approaching and that will make it even harder to sell.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. I'd probably hang on to her if I was in your position as it's a lot less painful spending money on a car you'll keep, and most of the depreciation has already finished.

Hi, working backwards on your questions, don't expect to get more than £30k on a private sale, £25k part-ex. This will get you in the right frame of mind ie pessimistic. Your likely buyer will be looking for a car with less miles on, but will be tempted by a bargain on price....its a buyers market as there are plenty of used 996s out there.
As for anticipating major expenditures, 996's dont have much go wrong with them, no sign that high mileage is an issue, wasn't an issue with earlier generation 911s either. I run a Nov 97 car, only 60k miles, only tyres pads and front discs replaced outside of routine service fluid changes.
Usual reason for changing expensive cars is boredom and wish to try something else, but dont think 996 has changed enough to warrant part-exing for a new(er) one of the same. As domster says, you've taken the big hit on depreciation it wont lose much more if you keep it on for a bit

That's a deal!! Thanks!!

Has to be a futures contract though, for delivery in three years time when the car has another 50k on the clock.

Thanks for the comments guys! Have decided to hang onto it until it falls to pieces in several years time. Next service will be with an independent though!

Seriously some high margin traders won't give you much more for it than that!

Hi
My 1998 C4 Tip has 120k miles on it. I traded an X-type which had seen more in depreciation in 12 months than I care to recall. So all in all it cost me 28k. The service history indicated nothing really horrendous has gone wrong over the years. It was driven back and forth to Paris over a two year period and whilst high miles it has really kept the car working to perfection. As far as things going wrong I would expect wheel bearings and the like before engine components. I wish I had seen your car available - I would have paid 30k for it. All the dealers I approached wouldn't sell me one with that many few miles on it for less than £34k so they obviously have a high margin! I was only offered £12k for my 2001 x-type with only 20k miles on it - they all said poor reliability has depressed values. So as far as miles are concerned many buyers don't mind - I certainly don't. Try E-bay - you will be surprised how many people there are with cash to buy cars like yours or even mine.

Forget ebay...I tried selling my 34k mile tip C4 on there and the max bid I got was £30k..(see my thread..timewasters when selling porsches).

The cars are apparantly well built and suffer only from oil leaks. There have been one or two reported incidents of engine failure but Porsche tend to pick up the tab under the goodwill scheme if the car has FPSH.

When you are buying a car dealers will tell you that C4 and tiptronic is a desirable combo and when it comes to selling it back to them they tell you that tiptronics are hard to sell...who knows what to believe...I guess its all about finding the right buyer...

Which OPC was it?

It will be interesting to see what that goes up for at the OPC...my guess is £38,995...

Oh..thought you said it was an early 99..The problems with 98 cars is that they didnt have clear indicators and everone wants them and to change them you are looking at £1k. Also a big issue are wheels. If the car doesnt have 18" wheels then thats another £1-2k. This really puts a ceiling on resale..Sat nav and colour combo sound nice, however..

Saying all this- if your friend's car has these items then tell him to contact me the next time he decides to give a car away
