Diff removal guide?

Does such a thing exist? I'm just about to replace the diff bushes and as soon as I start it looks like the long bolt below which sits above the lower wishbone will snag on the driveshaft...



Before I start swearing, cursing and generally hitting things is there a guide or some general tips in doing the job?

I did it with the diff out Rob, but mines a different diff anyway. Del has had your style in/out frequently so I'd rattle his cage if I was you.

Once you have the mounts & shafts off its not too hard to wiggle the diff out. Good time to fettle chassis up there & fuel pump... handbrake stuff ~ but I guess yours was done recently anyway.

I have a feeling Del could do it with his eyes closed

Looks like the mounting plate will move towards the nose of the car with the plate > diff bolts removed which then allows the long bolts to be withdrawn followed by releasing the upper mount...

Actually I don't want to get the diff out, just swap the bushes over.

I've just replaced my diff with no problems.
I found the most tricky part was the handing over of the green stuff to the man that knows what to do.
I still have all fingers and thumbs though.

I take it it will want to drop a little when the upper fixing is removed then?

The bolt in your picture will come out in the direction you are already puling it. If you then take out the two fixings onto the diff the plate will come out. If you take out just one side at a time the Diff can happily stay in place while you do the bushes. That is to do the two lower ones, the upper one is a little more challenging.

To get the Diff out :- ( this is for a BTR)

Anti roll bar off
Exhaust off
Remove drive shaft flange bolts
Remove prop shaft flange bolts
Remove speed sensor
Remove locking nuts on the rear face of front fixing bolts
Remove all but one of the socket cap bolts at the front
Remove all but one of the socket cap bolts at the rear
Support Diff
Remove last two bolts
Rotate unit slightly and lift up at the front.
Lower the support and out it comes.

Have done it several times now and the whole job, old one out new one in takes between 3- 4 hours.

If you take the Diff out and then remove the front supporting plates take careful note of which way they fit, they are handed and have a correct way up which is not entirely obvious.

As I say not done the top one, have looked at it several times and decided to leave it for now as it looks an absolute pig to do and on my car seems to be still in a good condition, it was the front ones that were shot. Can’t think it would be possible with the Diff in place. It appears to be pushed directly into the chassis so unlike the front ones or the wishbones you can’t put them in the vice and do battle with it
