I have one, its a great car i love it to bits but unfortunately the consumption is about 45/46 mpg frown the performance i find is actually better than my brothers manual new shape cooper D, not sure why though :s i think the gearing is slightly different on them as mine seems to rev higher in 4th/5th/6th doing the same speeds in his car as a comparison which is better for if you want to nudge the speed up a bit from about 55-60 where as his you need to go to 5th to get some movement but on the downside that is probably one of the reasons for the worse consumption (he gets about 53mpg)
Both of us agree that the auto is nicer to drive daily.
Hope this helps

I have no experience of the Cooper D, however I did get a Cooper Auto as a courtesy car a few weeks back. Being someone used to manual's i found the gearbox to be very sluggish and also bizarrely quite eratic - For example at 65, middle lane of M-Way, put ,my foot down a bit to pull out and it cogged it down to 3rd (from 5th) and made one hell of a racket, as well as mega revs etc, not very relaxing to drive imo.

I also found the paddles totally counter intuitive - BOTH pull forwards for up and away for down changes - natually i expected that say the right would be up shift, left for down shift. It felt very un-natural to me and didnt lend itself to 'spirited' driving which i think the chasis is great for!
