I posted this earlier on the VW / Audi section but no reply.... just started snowing again so posted here too!

Need to check that on a quattro (A6 avant) one just puts snow chains on the front tyres?

I have not got a handbook, so cannot refer to that.

I've 235/45 17s fitted, suspect it might be tight getting the chains on, anyone managed?

Wife is due to give birth in a couple of weeks and having been snowed in this morning with local roads blocked by abandoned SUVs, and expecting another 20cm of snow tonight need a plan to get to hospital if it all kicks off! Especially as council have tonight announced they will only grit / salt the A-roads from now on....

Plan B is the co-ordinates of nearby flat field to land a helicopter..........

Have had 4Wd Turbo-charged Subarus of both Impreza and Forester flavours. Only ever had one set of chains and only ever used them in anger on the front wheels (otherwise you can't steer / stop).

HTH. Oh and good luck with the delivery! smile

Edited to add: Test out your snow chains *now*. Be sure that they fit and that you know how to put them on and secure them properly!

Agree with Farley.

I've got an Impreza, used chains before on the front (my old wrx) and just had a quick glance in the handbook and it confirms chains on the front. I'm sure the Quattro would be the same...?

Thanks for the advice, I had a practice fit of one on the front earlier this evening.

Not a lot of clearance, but will hopefully do the business if called upon.

Hopefully now I have plans in place they will not be called upon!
