A Lap Of The Nurburgring

Nurburg lap with hilarious passenger

Lapping the famous Nurburgring in germany my Skyline GTR34 which is running 480hp, but is capable of over 600hp.
The passenger poor John form up North asked for a lap while under the influence of a few beers the night before. He came to be fondly known as the "claw" as you will see that at time John or "Claw" is a little stressed at times. This was given away by the guttural noises and involuntary lifting of his right arm in the shape of a claw. Listen out for his wails particularly during the pass on the GT2.

This is a sub 8 min car in 480hp mode. But due to a few yellow flags and traffic the lap suffered..

And before any one says bad overtake. Yes my BAD! BUT as the rules say anything coming up behind you on the track that was not there before is faster than you. And you should let it over take. And it was'nt going to move.

Quick lap and you can drive, for sure, but waaaaaay to aggresive for Touristenfahrt, IMO, and had that overtake gone wrong at Steilstrecke you'd have got the Mother and Father of all bills from NGmbH.

But the thing is, it is supposed to be used to drive faster than on a public road, as a release. He is obviously skillful and driving within his limits. The Porsche driver was not.

As a release??? PMSL where did you get that little gem from? biggrin

It's a one way de-restricted toll road upon which German standard road rules apply. If you look at the video properly you'll see that each time the GT2 was allegedly not moving over, he was about to overtake slower traffic himself. A little more patience on the part of the OP and all would have been fine and dandy. thumbup

Oh and I shan't mention the yellow BMW at Metzgesfeld as that poor sod's probably still trying to get the st stains out of his seat wink

I agree. Good quick driving, and he obviously knows the track well, but just too aggressive, especially at Metzgesfeld and Steilstrecke.

Even if it had been a trackday with the extra safety of flag marshals etc, most TD organizers don't allow overtaking in corners & without consent as they know the risk of confusion over who has the 'line' dramatically increases the chance of people coming together.

Just have a little patience and wait 2 seconds until after the corner, trying to repeatedly take people in corner in that environement WILL result in a crash eventually.

It wont help after the fact saying 'he should have been watching his mirrors' (eg Metzgesfeld) when you're both planted in the Armco or a biker is lying bleeding. You have the choice to remove most of the risk of not being seen by not overtaking when someone is likely to come across on you.

And thats a shame. It would be better if everyone driving TF was using good judgment about when to get stuck in and when to be a bit patient / courteous. wink

+1 Good video, knows the ring, but far to aggresive for a tourist day in my opinion, borderline bullying at stages.

good points dave, but sadly there isnt the level of control at the ring that you have on all UK track days. if there are rules to the ring iv never seen them. i for one drove to uk track rules as you have said no overtaking on bends etc. exsept for a polo that gave way to me and went the safe way round the drop down thing and i went in it.

all in all this vid is good and yes the passenger was funny (the point of this vid going up). maybe he was being over agressive but that is down to the driver and he will be the one expaning the crash if he was to crash.

on a diffrent note, arnt cameras etc band from the ring now? there were in september when i was there.

1. IT'S NOT A TRACK DAY banghead
2. There are rules on a bloody great big sign in the car park and on the NGmbH website.
3. Yes, filming during TF is banned.

Yep, thats why its important the drivers & riders take responsibility for each others safety.

The rules are on the notice boards. Actually they do *not* prohibit overtaking in corners, the rules of the road apply so technically its a multi-lane one way road so everyone should drive on the right (not the racing line) and only on the left when overtaking.

The point I was making about overtakes in corners is that it should be obvious that people will go to the apex so in practice the sensible thing is not to put yourself there at the same time. I've had lots of instances when the car in front has clearly seen me and is indicating right but they then *still* take the apex. Remove the risk by waiting for the corner exit.

I don't think we should be satisfied with that. I'd rather argue the case and encourage more care up front that wait until its all gone wrong and say "live by the sword, die by the sword", especially when some other party is likely to get caught up in the crash.
