It's called 'what is actually happening' rather than 'what the Daily Mail tells you is happening'
I agree - im sick to death of the media playing up this recession in order to sell papers etc - Yes things are bad but forcing all this doom and gloom down everyone's throats is hardly going to help.If house prices really did go up in Jan you can bet your arse it wont get any major news coverage

The simple fact is this: there are more people wanting Houses then there are Houses out there.
So there is still a shortage of housing.
I've had 2 house viewings this week, and a third one due today. My fiancee sold her House just before christmas.
Coincidentally or not, FOR SALE and then SOLD boards have been appearing around here for the last month but local isn't national, however the Halifax news is indicative that the lift, even if temporary, is wider. So there is still a shortage of housing.

Prices are falling, there may be the odd blip/month but they're still going to fall.
Besides, it means the next rung on the ladder is cheaper and first time buyers have a chance of getting on. We're a while off though so expect no proper rises until 2010 at the earliest.
It's like car trade ins, yes your 2002 car is worth a lot less, but the 2006 car you want to buy has fallen even more so the cost to upgrade/change is less.

There are also far more house adverts showing substantial discounts from last year's price.
That doesn't indicate a shortage to me.
