On R2 today, on the traffic news, a number of lorries had jack-knifed blocking roads. I recall many years about the merits of an "Anti Jack Knife" device being fitting on lorries.

What happened?

a. Didn't it work
b. Didn't it catch on
c. It does work, in sort of fashion, but not good enough in current weather conditions?

Just curious.

Maybe it prevented them from turning? How would it work?

The anti-jack-knife device was actually just abs for the trailer. If you drive a truck like a twunt you can still jack a truck with this system fitted. Usually happens in this type of weather to trucks with no load, no weight over the rear axle(unit). Once the wheels lose a tiny bit of grip there isn't the weight to push it back into the road, the trailers forwards momentum will just push the back of the unit round.

Its often drivers paid on mileage that have this problem, it encourages them to speed and take risks.

I was under the impression it only locks the 5th wheel at speeds above 40mph so it slower conditions it wouldn't be working.

I think you mean the Hope Anti Jack Knife device, it was effectively a clutch on the fifth wheel which locked up when required. It was on Tomorrows World originally & I remember following lorries with a sticker on the back saying it was fitted.

The 5th wheel on an artic is the coupling plate that locks the trailer to the unit nothing more.

see st picture an look behind the unit to see the 5th wheel that hold the king pin

jack knifing occurs as a result of the trailer being heavier than the unit and some bad driving but i have had it by driving down a hill to fast and the up the other side and loosing traction on the unit but the trailer kept going.

it is also easily corrected if you know what the fk you are doing. like hitting the bramms brake to lock up the trailer to correct the skid.

But maybe thats just me i took the fking time to learn what the fk i was driving and not thinking i was fking gods gift like the fking rest of you.

because the thing that is wrong with this country is you all thing it should have instructions well let me tell you it doesn't it takes time and money to learn, posting on the INTERNET will not help and no matter how hard you look there are no instruction cards on the roads.

So turn off your fking fog lights and use your indicators dont use the middle lane unless you need to overtake and i dont mean the car 40 miles ahead of you.

Please grow the fk up and stop thinking the world owes you instructions use COMMON sense instead because its always there and free.

yes its free although no longer taught to our kids.

So before you moan think...

errr...who's moaning? It was a query about a device. Not a dig at truckers.

Does it happen because of some truckers having a really big chip on only one shoulder, making them unbalanced?

I was passing a lorry on the 2 lane M65 ( a few years ago) when it jack knifed just as a passed the trailer wheels, as I passed the trailer, the rear trailer wheels locked up solid I turned my head to see the wheels thinking what is happening, and when i looked forward the cab was coming towards me.

I was told that there was a fault on a airline and the saftey system had locked the trailer wheels, cab then goes any where it wants (so the driver said).

no where to go, no time.

this was the outcome to my car (rover 220 turbo coupe 200 bhp).

many jack knifes are caused when a driver uses the exhaust brake going down hills....it's slowing down the tractor unit (cab) but no braking is being applied to the trailer and away it can go

The exhaust retarder acts on the driving wheels and the truck (if auto) usually kicks down 1 or 2 gears, this gives more of a braking effect. its like putting the handbrake on.

Thank you Mr gods gift, now we all know all there is to know about jack - knifing lorries,...... I do not usually get irritated, but who rattled your cage, we were asking decent logical questions and expecting decent logical answers, may be you missed that point.
