On my way back from seeing a client this evening I drove through Sidcup in Kent, and passed a restaraunt called 'Sophies choice'.
Is it just me, or does this not exactly set the scene for a light, carefree, joyous, relaxed evening?....

No, you miss my point. I've absolutely no idea what the food, service or decor is like. Are you familiar with the 1982 award winning film of the same name, starring Meryl Streep? The title, refers to the choice the main character had to make when she arrived at the concentration camp. Which of her children she could choose to live, while the other was immediately sent to the gas chambers...
Not exactly somewhere you might kick back and relax, trying not to think of this scene from the film.

I think that is the point entirely, as that post shows, probably the owners and most of the clientele would be oblivious to the reference.
