DRIVERS with gas-guzzling cars in Edinburgh could see their residential parking costs double to £320 under city council plans.
But drivers of the greenest vehicles would see their permit's price drop from the current standard £160 to just £30.
Edinburgh council's scheme links the cost of parking permits to a vehicle's road tax.
There are five proposed bands. The owners of the greenest cars - who do not pay road tax - would pay just £30 for a permit.
Drivers with cars paying £120, £170 and £210 road tax bands would pay £160 for a permit.
Charges for vehicles such as Land Rovers would jump from £160 to £320.
The proposals go before the transport and environment committee on Tuesday.
The council wrote to more than 60,000 permit holders and residents in the capital's controlled parking zones to get their views on the scheme.
The question asked was: "Do you agree with dropping the price of a residential parking permit for those with less polluting cars and raising the price for more polluting cars?"
Only 1670 people replied - with three-quarters of them in favour. But transport convener Phil Wheeler said the public clearly agreed with the scheme.
He said: "People should pay the appropriate costs of owning their vehicle which should reflect the pollution it creates."
Officials estimate that more than 11,000 people would pay less under the scheme, with just 3348 paying more. And the council would make £50,000 a year less under the scheme.

When they are moving they are consuming fuel at a rate proportionate to their emissions and hence have already paid in the fuel duty.
