I always used to wash my Griff with Fairy liquid, which seemed to work well.

Then I read somewhere that FL contains salt, acid, Nitromors and cyanide or something. The long and the short of it was that it stripped all the paint off your car and rotted it to death.

So, having just had a respray, I've tried the Autoglym car shampoo.
Only one thing - it doesn't clean the car - doesn't seem to cut throught the grease.

So - what do you guys reckon is the best car cleaning product?

I think the problem with things like fairy liquid is that they strip any protective waxes off the car.

Have used Autoglym products for some time now and swear by them.

When I sold my last car recently, the paint on it was as good as when I bought it 5 years previously. It was a 14 year old Lotus Excel which had never had or needed a respray. The paintwork still looked excellent. Regular washing and staying away from products like T-Cut helped keep it that way.

If the car has several weeks of winter mud on it you may need 2 applications. Never had any problems except really stubborn stuff like tar deposits in which case I use the Autoglym tar remover.

Turtle Wax Extreme. Brilliant, can't beat it, followed by a nice Turtle Wax Extreme polish, looks like the K9's undercarriage.

Oh - and I have no connection with them.

So if you're reading Mr. Turtle, can I have some freebies?

Northern council estate / fairy liquid joke:

"Mummy, mummy. Why are your hands so soft?"

"Because I'm only 12 years old."

Fairy liquid!!!!!?!?!?

Autoglym is probably the best you can get off the shelf (Halfords, A1 etc) unless you start getting specialist mail-order stuff (Zymol, Zaino, Waxwizard, Meguiars.. etc)

Meguiars Gold Class shampoo is probably the best you can buy over here (www.meguiars.co.uk). Ths US stocks some really good stuff, but its an arse to bring it over here (tax, shipping...)

I gotta agree with the old fairy liquid, but it does strip the wax off the paint eventually, so mucho polishing is need which aint no bad thing anyhoo! As an actual cleaner tho' its the bo***cks!

Cheers guys.
I've had to go outside and apologies to my car now for so much chemical abuse.

Should I stop using a scouring pad as well.

Get yourself some Meguiars..

Zymol is awesome stuff too, but its not as easy to apply (it'll take you a day solid to do the car) and its quite expensive, if you're not really into waxing/polishing your car.

It is worth it tho - I did half the MX5 today, and will do half the rest tomorrow. I'll try and get a pic of the result to post on here.
