Does any1 have any idea wot is wrong with my 95 golf gti. After about 20 mine of driving the engine will suddenly cut out, then after about a min will start again but will then kangaroo around before cutting out again. I have changed the lamda sensor on it twice both times showing signs that it had been running rich so I removed the k&n air filter which helped for a while but now the problem is back...

Any1 had a similar problem or any suggestions other than scrapping it?

Ps: it recently had the head gasket replaced if this helps??

Could be an ignition fault, does it have a Bosch ignition module? These can fail when hot.

My GTI used to die in a (kind of) similar manner (see profile for pic, mk3 GTI 8v). After nearly being rubbed out by a HGV after much money spent at an ill-informed VW dealer and investigating myself it turned out the be the ECU relay:

Dodgy relays are black - the newer modified OEM part is light grey. If you do change out refuse any black-cased unit and get the grey only.

I do have to say I don't rememeber any kangaroo'ing - just used to cut out randomly then fire up after 1-20 minutes until next time.

Hi

golf mk3 gtis are known for this problem really common and can be a number of things, as mentioned ecu relay is common worth trying, another is cleaning the maf easily done and cured mine after trying numerous things. worth cleaning the throttle body as well this is probably full of crap by now as well. You could do both jobs in about an hour. Worth noting though that this dosent always work and some golfs are really plauged with this issue check out golfgti.co.uk loads of threads/info on there
